This is the traditional way to baste an egg. I was taught to do it by placing a lid or some sort of cover over the egg and letting the generated steam "baste" the egg instead.

ayeup. Just a small layer to enable spooning drippings up to baste over the egg is all it takes.
But the steaming method works really well, without any additional fat.

Hate liver. I find it horribly bitter.
I remember as a kid, my mother would try to get me to eat it by telling me it was something exotic, like giraffe liver or zebra liver. Didn't really work, as it still tasted horrible. Then she tried to tell my I could die if I didn't eat liver. I think she had it confused. You can die not
having a liver, but I think you can go on surviving for many, many years without
eating liver. At this point, it's been since 1978 since I last had it. Its smell disgusts me, too.

I like very lightly cooked liver in liver and onions, and only moderately more cooked in chopped liver. But both need to be practically swimming in schmaltz with sautéed onion to take it to top level.
And I can wax poetic about the uses of mayonnaise. Especially SD's homemade garlic aioli.

You have never eaten calves liver my friend! Sweet and succulent, a thing of rare beauty on a plate.......

Wow you guys are picky eaters. I have no aversion to food whatsoever. I have eaten everything from fried grasshoppers in Mexico to duck kidneys in China.
I prefer fresh food over canned because they taste better. But I dont hate them.
Of course as I was typing this I did think of something..... canned or bottled olives. I loved the fresh ones in California, I hate the rest of them.

I buy kalamata olives in bottles that are a thing of beauty SB. The combination of bread and olives is one of the great gastronomic mysteries of this world. How can something so simple be so good!

True that is a delicious combination
I like my food cooked - and well. Not a fan of a blue steak

I remember the smell of liver and onions was absolutely disgusting. I bet it's been that long for me too.

Always have, always will. It's a texture thing.
Last weekend, I tried a simple recipe for coq au vin. And yes, I left out the mushrooms.

Yeah I’m no fan of mushies - but if I have to have a mushy - I can get a well fried button mushroom down - but there must be bacon or it’s a no-deal.
And definitely can’t come to shitake mushies

Yeah, I got no probs with Mushrooms. Big black mushrooms slow-roasted in balsamic vinegar with rosemary makes a great burger patty.
Must say my dislikes have never changed. But since the last time I posted in this thread, the GF has gone full vegan (5 years+ now). Hasn't changed anything for me of course. Red meat and potatoes continues to serve me well.
