I only looked at a few issues of Animal Man. It looked pretty cool, and I don't know why I didn't get it. I liked when someone cut his arm off, and, while writhing in pain, he detected a worm nearby, and used its regenerative ability to grow a new one. And I liked when Gorilla Grodd showed up, and Vixen and AM compared notes.

I'm not too familiar with the character, so I don't really know which it is. A guy at work loaned me a reprint of the first few-several issues of some run or other. He was the inventor of some nuclear power plant, and went into it during a meltdown to try to shut it down. He comes out burned to a crisp, somehow still alive. And when he recovers, he's got powers at least along the lines of Watchmen's Dr. Manhattan, but still has emotions and all. At one point, he shows a woman what it's like, and they have this conversation:

“Where are we?”

“Location is a null concept here. You might say we’re just outside everything. From here you can see that everything is energy. Spacetime is energy, organized into patterns. See the weave?

“Yes, but… Is this real? I mean…”

“There is a much closer relationship between imagination and the nature of reality…than we imagine.”

“We imagine the world and it is?”

“No. We fail to imagine and we are punished with reality. We fail to imagine and so there is matter, with edges and hardness, length, breadth and depth. We fail to grasp our oneness with spacetime, which is matter, which is us. And so, the world is imposed upon us. The organization of energy that constitutes our minds is the part that’s real. The corporeal part is the waste product of insufficient thought—our lack of understanding, congealed around us.”

“We…are energy?”

“All is energy. We give meaning to it… Or fail to. Science fools around way too much with the crusty surfaces and crisp little bits. This is the essence. Anything can be done. It’s all a matter of moving energy. It’ll come if you call it… Do you follow me? Pierce? Pierce! Be careful!

“Ugly. Ugly. Ugly.”

“There’s nothing here to protect you from your thoughts. This is no place for low self-esteem…”

“Whore. Whore. Horrible. Murderer.”

“You’ve really lost it. I’d better get you back. Don’t worry. Everything will be fine. See? You’re better already. You’ll be good as new once I get you back to where there are limits.”

Me like Hulk 1-6, Tales to astonish 60-101, Hulk 181-474, and Hulk 1-present best. Me also like Marvel Team-up 53-54, Daredevil 163 and Spiderman 119-120 & 328 too.

Fist, the run is from the Valiant Comics in the 90's. There was an original run in the 60's by Charlton (I Think) that wasn't nearly as deep, but was cool in a '60's way.

Banner, Your books are the best! The only reason I don't have them all is that I haven't won the lottery yet!

The only comic series I ever read is still my favorite. None other then...

The Tick

The original series was the best, 1-12. A shame Edlund never actually finished #13. Karma Tick had its moments. The other series they tried to make since then just fall short of the original.-jay

dANdeLION wrote:The Adams run on Green Lantern/Green Arrow (78-87?) was really good, as was the run he started on Avengers (92-103).
My first post - hi everyone.

I have Avengers 98 in front of me now. It was the start of Barry Windsor-Smith's run. But that's not important.

What is important is that this comic has, on its letter page, a letter from ... Stephen R. Donaldson, of Kent, Ohio.

I'm not sure of the etiquette here - is it ok to just type it in? It's a fascinating, if long, discussion of the decline of Marvel comics.

Hey, tomo. Welcome! that's very cool and you have a few hundred people here (at least) that will love to see it. I'd suggest type it in a new topic here in general discussion so it dosen't get buried. And a moderator can move it if needed.

Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Has Starslammers been mentioned? The graphic novel is as good as it gets. Combined with the great mini-series, that can qualify as a run maybe. :) (And they're the only race I've ever heard of who I think could take on the Haruchai.)
