Let me say a few words, words that are not going to make people happy.
First, don't trust AMAZON for publishing information... ever! They have screwed up so many times it makes me physically ill that a business can be that wrong and still be running. Trust the official SRD site that is coming soon. THAT source will be official.
Second, the book won't be 896 pages. It will be several hundred less than that, I guarantee it. Why do I know this? A few reasons, but the most important is: DO NOT TRUST AMAZON FOR INFORMATION! Don't get riled up over this. Get riled up after Steve has edited the manuscript and knows finally how many pages it will be in manuscript form, then how many pages it will be in publisher book layout form.
Finally... relax! There are plenty of great books out there to read. This one is one of them, trust me. Just realize that we have an entire 10 months to go at the minimum, and A LOT is going to happen in those 10 months to make the fans happy.

Spoil Sport... Yet I like this warning because it's true... Amazon is the biggest farce since the Oscar's.

I received this from the publishers of the British edition.........
Dear Mr Fanning,
We are indeed publishing STEPHEN DONALDSON'S "The Final Chronicles of Thomas
Covenant". The first of the quartet, THE RUNES OF THE EARTH, is currently
scheduled for October, but that date is not set in stone as the author is
currently engaged in rewrites.
Best wishes,

Well, at least if he's in the revision stage he must have finished the main work. October sounds like an 'at the earliest', though. Think December-February.

Who says we are getting a Potter book this fall? The Tower book is what I am looking forward to the most.

Yes!
Not hear? When noise was everywhere! it tolled
Increasing like a bell. Names in my ears
Of all the lost adventurers, my peers -
How such a one was strong, and such was bold,
And such was fortunate, yet each of old
Lost, lost! one moment knelled the woe of years.
There they stood, ranged along the hillsides, met
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! In a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew.
'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came.'
"There I will sing all their names!"
YES!!

Great news about Runes being listed on Amazon.com in the U.K. even if the details are nebulous at best right now. I've visited the Putnam/Berkeley publishing site, actually its the Berkley Publishing Group, Penguin Putnam, Inc. They are the second biggest English language trade book publisher in the world so I guess Steve did all right. Authors under their belt or imprints include Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Ursula Le Guin, Nora Roberts, Stephen King, Robin McKinley and Guy Gavriel Kay. No mention there yet of Donaldson's book deal and Publishers Weekly is silent as well. I guess the publisher will get the word out as they see fit. Looking forward to the Donaldson site!
Here's the publisher site if anyone's interested in the meantime.

Amazon isn't the only company that puts out completely rediculous dates.
I had been waiting for Melanie Rawn's "The Captal's Tower" for two years. I contacted the DAW website to learn that publication would occur in two short months. I waited patiently, saving my money to realize my dream. When the date rolled around, I went to Barnes an Nobles to find it was not in stock. Discouraged, I looked up Ms. Rawn's website for the first time, to find it hadn't EVEN BEEN WRITTEN YET!!!!
Needless to say this is not the case with SRD's books, but don't be surprised if the date listed is not several months off. These companies can be SO irresponsible sometimes, it makes me sick.
