Thank goodness for ebook publishers. They can afford to experiment.

I couldn't allow myself to write crap, and I'll bet you couldn't either. It would end up being a clever parody. :wink:

Well, as long as it's fresh crap, you'll have plenty of flies buying it.

Well at least a few things are certain:
1. They get people reading;
2. They supply money to publishers to allow them to publish good books now and then;
3. Eventually people will find a good book.

I am going to start writing a novel at the end of this year, when I have more time. It shall undoubtedly be crap-but in the best possible way. I shall expect you all to petition publishers...

Does that mean I have to stand in front of Doubleday holding a sign that reads "Stop The Killing"?

Protagonist. That's good, right? Do I get to say cool things like "Hellfire!" and "Don't Touch Me"?

No, you get to say, "All your base", and "ALT+255".

I don't know if he's the the worst, but to me he's the most boring of writers...Ta-Da...Robert Jordan...He is like Terry Goodkind, never seem to get to the point, to the end of the story that is...I know, the journey is what counts, but then make it a worthwhile one...

My mother reckoned that I should try Robert Jordan, whereas my Dad said it is all tosh (then again he is the one who thought Alexander Besher was okay). After reading all of this thread, I think I shall skip Jordan entirely. Is anyone reading the recent books by Neal Stephenson? I just read a review of the upcoming second book in the Baroque sequence and it says it is "...not only boring, but deeply disappointing.As so many North American writers seem to do after they achieve some success, Stephenson has become megolomaniac, producing books that can hardly be lifted, let alone read."
I think this is a great shame, as I really loved Cryptonomicon. One can tell though that there is the danger in his writing of becoming overwhelmingly geeky.Does anyone else have a take on his newer stuff? Should I really avoid like the plague? I want to believe there is hope...

I enjoyed Snow Crash and The Diamond Age by Stephenson, but that's all I've read... :?

I think you're quite right. If I set out to write something crap, it would be too knowing - a clever parody, as you said. But if I set out to write something good...well, that's a different matter :P

I never bothered reading Jordan, and I have no urgent desire to start. Judging by the opinions of my fellow Watchers, I don't need to lose sleep over him. I would think SRD fans have a good sense of what's crap and what's not. :)

Judging by how many like Lord of the Rings, you may be mistaken in that assumption :| ;)
