Willem Defoe would've been a great choice ten years ago, but I think he might still be able to pull it off. Christian Bale or Eric Bana would also get my approval.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I'm not sure anyone could play him. He's such a complicated character. He is precisely the reason why I don't think a movie could ever touch the intricate emotional scope of the Chronicles. But, if it does come to pass (and I shudder still at the thought), I hope they go for an actor who can pull off charactization and not go for the Hollywood "star" to give it a good "look".

Hellfire, are you not entertained?

Post by markjeffrey »

Russell Covenant, the Master and Commander of Starfare's Gem?

Tell me this isn't so. I cannot imagine 'Hellfire and bloody damnation' being delivered with an Australian accent. The world does not need a beefy, affable Covenant - he must be gaunt. And irritable.

Crowe is a chameleon; he also changes accents with relative ease. But I agree that he's not the right physical type for Covenant.

Very very good !~!!
very very good !!

But yet there is one of the right age, the right physical attribute, one of the right mental offset that could carry, no, be the character needed to pull off such a part

No, just a little one, I would do it for scale.

in fact instead of taking it to the big screen it should prob be done in a miniseries first, and then re-done with the big budget and all the FX that would go with it.

It should be done as an animated film, with Sean Connery as the voice of Mhoram, and James Earl Jones as Foul.

James Earl Jones could do Foul, no doubt; I think Christopher Lee would be better. But they'll have to hurry up and start casting if they want to use him!

James Earl Jones' voice would be the personfication of our idea of FOUL but consider this... his total gross box office draw (domestic) of all his movies...(52 of them) since his first (Dr. Strangelove) is $1,509,797,255.00 .... anybody want to write a check?

I'm new here, haven't read too much what you've written, but the fact that there may be an adaption for the screen of the chron is kinda heartbreaking. How can they even believe that they can transform Linden's thoughts and feelings into pictures, in a pleasant way? Foul damn it! I don't want the works of SRD become a comercial issue, they're just to precious to be destroyed like that, don't you think?

Have a great night (at least it's 23.00 here in Sweden at the moment)

God, I can just see the advertising campaign...wouldn't it be horrific to see it promoted the way Shrek 2 is being promoted right now? They'd be serving "Leprosy Sundaes" at Baskin Robbins with "White Gold Sprinkles" and horrific Drool Rockworm toys in your McDonald's Happy Meal...

Though a Covenant prequel focusing on Kevin might be entertaining...

hehehe....how about a Foamfollower fun pack? Super-sized drink and popcorn, with some strange flavour of pop claiming to be diamondraught *grin*
ok, yes, that was lame...

I still stand by Viggo Mortensen for the Covenant part...I have absolutely no clue who to cast for any of the Haruchai...

hehe :D

Anyway I wouldn't like it if Aragorn suddenly became Covenant. I actually think SRD himself would be perfect for the part. He just has that perfect covenant-look. But that's just silly  When I look at pics of Crowe now, I actually see a Covenant in him. But, still, he's not the one.

Woa, this pic of Gary Oldman, gah! Perfect!

Gary Oldman is a fabulous character actor and he would go the extra mile it takes to get a persona down just right. IN TC's choice, he'd lose the weight to get the gauntness needed.
Very good choice. I've admired his versitility for years.
