Energy vampires, huh? Yech. I know exactly what you mean.
So you're saying, that if you keep coming out on top, feeling like you're dealing with things, accomplishing difficult personal psychological tasks, that there IS in fact a light at the end of the tunnel?

I may twist your metaphor a little, if you don't mind.
Instead of the light at the end of the tunnel, I think I AM the light. As my attempt to cope with life (and the forces of Darkness that work within it) proves successful--my light shines a little brighter in the darkness of the world. And with luck, I can ignite a few other candles as well, thus beating back the darkness even more.
Then, when I'm done walking down the tunnel and get to the other side, hopefully, I will leap into the Great Sea of Light at the other end--rather than tumbling into the Abysmal Darkness.
Just feeling a bit metaphorical tonight. Please excuse me.

Sounds good to me... but you said you were obscenely happy with your lot in life. Is that something you've always had, is it characteristic of your lot, or is it something you had to work for.
Hum. Boy, this is TOTALLY on topic to the internet

I am obscenely happy NOW. I've lived in absolute misery and despair in the past. I've dealt with enough of the $hit and increased my wattage enough that I am generally very happy. Also, having stumbled into a job that perfectly matches my philosophy with colleagues that are in total harmony with me and kids that are growing and becoming more and more infused with "light" themselves has made a tremendous impact on me.
I feel like I live and work in paradise. That's not to say that life is eternally joy and laughter. But it's good. So very good. So much better than I've ever known at any other time in my life.
