One of the best "stand alones" I've read in quite awhile is The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford. It's one of the few "alternate histories" I've seen that actually works, and it's exquisitely written. It's Fantasy (kinda in the way Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Thirteenth Warrior are Fantasy...if you know what I mean... ).

Danlo passed The Dragon Waiting on to me when he was done, and I also loved it. It was a great read!

I read that a couple days ago - thought it was good, but nothing impressive.

George R.R. Martin is at least as good.
