Tommy Douglas, the father of Medicare, was ultimately voted the Greatest Canadian. Hard to argue with that choice. I ended up voting for Pierre Trudeau myself, instead of my earlier choice, Terry Fox. I still admire Fox, of course, but I recognize that it's admiration based on his personal achievement, not on what he did for the country as a whole. By contrast, Trudeau's vision of Canada, for instance as embodied in the Charter of Rights & Freedoms, has profound significance for every single Canadian citizen. Although it is maybe a more abstract thing than Medicare, the Charter is nonetheless just as important and beneficial, IMO.
