Hm...maybe I should make that shirt for the shop at Kevin's Watch.
"J.R.R. Tolkien:
The poor reader's
Stephen R. Donaldon"

I have always been a fast reader. I don't think I have been able to put off any Donaldson series for more than a week or two. (The Gap took me about 3 days) I think that once I got into runes I finished it that day.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I rushed to finish Runes and still took two weeks over it. The First and Second Chronicles combined took me almost a year of pretty much constant reading in the evenings and at weekends.

I would so buy that shirt, Jay. LOL, you know my objections to LOTR.... boy, don't get me started.

I'd buy that shirt too. Reminds me of the line from A River Runs Through It, when the narrator says "Methodists are just Baptists who can read."

Same. I almost gave up at the Tom Bombadil chapter; it is just stupid and childish.

Enough Rings bashing, Jesus. Probably wouldn't even be a TCTC if it hadn't been published.

Freedom of opinion. I dont have to like it, and many people dont.

Oh wow, I so said you had to like it. Real perceptive, Ur-Vile.

But you are acting like it's a sin to criticise it. Why are you getting so worked up over criticism of the book? God, you did the same when I criticsed buffy.
What's the "enough ring bashing"? It's not your call on what we can and cant criticise. My freedom of opinion is to use this forum to say what I want, you seem to want criticism to end. That's what I was referring to (lack of perception???) I just agreed to what Cov Jr wrote.
As for the statement regarding TCTC not being in existence if LOTR was never written; what is your point exactly? That I said it should never been published?

You call "it's stupid and childish" a criticism? My friends could make more structured and reasoned critiques after a few beers.
Loremaster wrote:What's the "enough ring bashing"?
It pisses me off, and I'd rather see people talk about TCTC in here when I click on this thread, not continuing the Tolkien bashing. I don't care if I'm not being nice or hurting your "freedom"--that's how I honestly feel. Don't make this into a thing about me taking away your right to an opinion, because us having this argument is expressing opinions right now. I'm just saying "stifle"--if you don't want to stifle, fine, I don't have to click on the thread if I don't want to.

My point is appreciation can exist without liking something.

I called the CHAPTER stupid and childish. And that's how it reads: silly songs and hobbits splashing in baths. Tom Bombadil sounds childish. If I wanted to spend a page criticising the books in depth I could have, but I chose not to. Absence of that is not evidence of my inability to critique a book.
Besides, most of your criticisms of the 80s use the same hyperbole I had used, only instead of you flooding this forum with thread after thread, I just posted.

Okay, yes it is off topic. But I posted my criticism and that is that. I dont like the books.

I'm sorry for attacking your opinion of the Tom Bombadil chapter. In passing, I'll say most of my 80s ramblings are in jest; I like a lot of 80s stuff, have some 80s CDs.
