I guess most castles (the real fortresses) are built on hills for strategic reasons, so I've kind of pictured it that way. The ones that you find in towns usually don't look like Orison at all (no walls, towers etc.).

Huh! Carcasonne actually looks like what I imagined, but I allways imagined Orison was made of a darker grey stone. Like only a few shades away from black with a slight blue-ish tint.

THE PRINCE'S SIEGE

Early the next morning, the siege of Orison castle began.
The huge, rectangular castle stood on slightly lower ground, surrounded by bare dirt and straggling grass - and surrounded, too, by the Alend army, with its supporting horde of servants and camp followers. From Prince Kraggen's perspective, Orison looked too massive - and the ring of attackers around it too thin - for the siege to succeed. He understood sieges, however. He knew his force was strong enough to take the castle.

Well, maybe there was a trace of mordancy in my post. Though I did have my reasons.

The edition I have of A Man Rides Through is pictured below. My first impressions of the cover art was that of the 'little people', and wars and faerie castles made me think about the game of chess.

Those are the covers I have too. I like them.
