When first reading it in 2002, that
Ned's death
really shocked me. I think I remember sitting up in bed and punching my mattress. Heh.
But then I remembered: he was quite the honest character--not very suitable for the court intrigue that Cersei and the other Lannisters excel in. I suppose it was Martin's way of saying, "This isn't your average fantasy yarn. It's gritty and low on heroics; not everyone survives." If you wear your heart on your sleeve, someone's libel to stab it.
I think I'm going to re-read these books, once I finish Le Guin's
Earthsea Cycle. Martin packs too much detail and too many clues/prophecies to merit just one reading.

I don't know what's wrong with you two; that was my favorite part of the book. Well, and when Bran was given flying lessons by Jaime.

Have you read the later books?

Yeah, I've read all four. I'm pro-Lannister. The Starks suck.

Don't worry, you'll start to love Jaime, too. He totally rocks!

Well, I've just read the theory that's all over the place about Rhaegar (I think that's his name) being his father, and jeez, I can't remember who the mother is. It's someone's sister, right (Ned's)? Otherwise, I don't really have any theories of my own.

That's the theory I go for, mainly since Ned never refers to Jon as his son -- merely as his blood. And that would make Jon the prince refered to by the prophecy. A song of Ice and Fire -- Jon Snow is Ice, Daeny is Fire. Those two are gonna have to shag. And consider she's his aunt (?), that's kind a hot and kind wierd.

Personally, I'm praying that Daenerys and Cersei get it on before this series ends.

I'm with you, Farm Ur-Ted. I am so pro Lannister. I love Jamie!
EL,
I had not put the Ice/Fire thing together with those two characters you mentioned in your spoiler. That is really good!!!!!!

It's not me. I didn't put it together, I just noticed some things in the text that made me suspicious, and went digging around on the internet. GRR Martin, like SRD, seems to like to give his readers some credit for intelligence (Like when Turoc was possessed by the Raver.)
Unfortunately, I don't think GRRM will live long enough to let us know if we're right or not.
Having read to the Fourth Book, I think Jamie is currently my favourite character. I see way too much of myself in Jamie, and am somewhat glad I don't have a sister. However, I must wait till book 5 before knocking Jon Snow from the #1 position.
