Check 70's or early 80's Superman comics and you'll see some of the worst storylines ever. Most of them dealt with hurting his feelings or people around him again and again. "Well, they got the newspapers janitor now...sigh. I suppose I should rescue him. They'll probably have Kryptonite too."
My inherited comic collection stops at about 1990 or so meaning I'm a Marvel fan because until just recently D.C. stunk imo.

DC has lots of great stuff. check out Morrison's Doom Patrol, Robinson's Starman, Gaiman's Sandman to start.

Pre-Crisis Earth 1 Supes was flying at infinite speed, and suddenly hit the Spectre, which stopped that flight in its tracks. Spectre said he was not allowed to keep flying like that.
Superman: "Who made you boss?"
Spectre: "I believe you know the answer to that, my friend."
So Supes winds up and hits Specter in the chest with a punch that would pulverize a planet! And when the dust settles, Spectre's standing there, and says, "Are you done?"
Heh. Even Earth 1 Superman couldn't take on God!!

pre-crisis Superman was also vulnerable to magic. and cheesy plot lines.

green: weakens and then kills.
red: crazy stuff (supes getting a bug head or becoming a troll)
gold:removed supes powers instantly and permanent.
blue: affected only Bizarros (was sent through the machine that created Bizarro)
white: killed plants. (not sure why this was invented, seems limited)

by my ultimate geekiness?

the store near where i grew up carried mostly dc. (JLA, Action, Adventure, Batman, Detective, WW. B&B, Dc Presents, Superman ,war, westerns, horror, GL, TT etc) the only Marvel we got (Two-In-One, Avengers, Power Man & Iron Fist) had the get the Marvels in a different part of town. the comics were cheap and available. many happy hours spent reading those comics.

Good try, dAN!
You're only off by one word, Sarge. It's "Let those who worship" not "Let all who worship."
Next - who can remember the opening paragraph to each and every Superman and Action Comics issue during the Curt Swan era? I'll give you a hint:
"Rocketed as a baby from the exploding planet Krypton...."

sorry no. how 'bout this though.
Faster than a speeding bullet,
more powerful than a locomotive,
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet
fights a never-ending battle for
Truth, Justice, and the American Way.
"look up in the sky"
"it's a bird, its a plane"
"its Superman!"
- did I get that one right?
btw: found a Green lantern site about the oaths because I couldn't remember Alan Scott's oath.

Not quite Sarge.
[Sound of bullet]
Faster than a speeding bullet,
more powerful than a locomotive,
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
"look up in the sky"
"it's a bird, its a plane"
"its Superman!"
Superman!
A strange visiter from another planet!
Who came to earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.
Superman!
Who could change the course of mighty rivers bend steel in his bare hands and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for
Truth, Justice, and the American Way.
I DID IT!
Totally from memory too.
And I haven't seen the show since I was a kid!!
I rule!
