Right excuse me I have never ever got the hang of this quoting business but I'll try!

Oh arse still can't do it!

Message to Reave - of course you're too laid back to be in a haters' club - you have the perfect place (St Nectans Glen) to get rid of all those nasty hateful thoughts. If everyone had a SNG in their backyard, the world would be a much nicer place!

I read the second Chronicles gritting my teeth every time Ljnden opened her holier than thou, whiny mouth, but thats not to say i don't think she is a well written character and works well in the story SRD created. The way she acted like she knew better what to do than than those who were part of the Land, and sat in judgement of them, made it impossible for me to really get behind her as a protagonist. Now, granted, she was the newbie and that worked against her perception-wise. She hadn't taken the journey of the first Chronicles that Covenant and we the readers had, hadn't "payed her dues". Still, she didn't act accordingly humble in that though, she had that air of superiority, despite lacking the experience in the Land the characters surrounding her had. Even near the very end of WGW she lacked the faith and vision others around her had in regard to Covenant and his purpose. I do think it is a testamant to SRD as a writer to create characters that are frustratingly human, imperfect and real enough to clench my fists over though, and my dislike of Linden as a character in the second Chronicles is in no way a criticism of SRD's writing.

This thread is hilarious to watch unfold, like old people after yoga. ;)
We were supposed to have disliked Linden, especially at the beginning, just like we were supposed to dislike TC in the FC. Some people just forgot to get over it, is all.

But if Linden is such a blight on the 2nd chronicles, perhaps she should be replaced. I vote for Anne Ramsey, but only if she can play the role while on 'shrooms.

I know.
I almost feel sorry for the newer members who weren't here for the beginnings of THOOLAH and the crying-like-a-baby HOL.
It was just tongue-and-cheek humor and some exagerated anti-Linden outrage that a lot of people had fun with.
I can imagine that coming into it later it might sound quite serious.
She does suck though.

And lets all raise our glasses and say:
All hail THOOLAH!
All hail The Holy Order of Linden Avery Haters

Funny, I've just been to a lovely Celtic well/baptism site in the middle of some woods and it's filled me with warm fuzzy feelings!

Maybe the Land is'nt that far away. Still, would like to be able to eat aliantha though! Must be around here somewhere........

Linden sucks=Linden rules; it's a classic SRD paradox!

well, i don't think the people who profess to disliking the character of Linden Avery dislike the fact that SRD created the character or think he should have written her differently. i am pretty sure most would agree wholeheartedly that her character is crucial to the character dynamics of the second Chronicles, since Covenant has bought into the Land fully at that point, Linden represents the pov of some of the "real" world, for example. what i think makes SRD such a great writer is his ability to creat such 3 dimensional depth to his characters and they aren't all nice safe people you have to like. that is what makes his works so engaging with the ability to evoke such strong emotions from his readers.

I like the side characters more than the "main characters" anyways...but still I don't see how anything a reader might hold against Linden wouldn't also be something to hold against Mr Covenant. Runes is the first point in the series (in mym opinion) where the story revolves around the main character, and maybe thats why people are cranky? There is no young or mature Lord Mhoram involved, nor any Saltheart Foamfollower... Anele isn't comprehensible (yet?) so you only have one character to assess.

I'm pretty new to this forum so I haven't had the chance to read through.. but at this point anyways I don't see why Linden is worthy of any special scorn.

i find her much easier to take in Runes than in the second Chronicles.
