As for the laptop thing, LF, I don't do that. A laptop is an expensive toy currently beyond my financial reach, anyway. And what's the harm? So true. But hey, I thought that Krispy Kreme was really popular in your part of the country? Krispy Kreme tried to start up here, but after a couple years almost all of them in the area have closed because we like Dunkin's too much.

I'm from the west coast. I'd never heard of Krispy Kreme 'til I was stationed in GA (or Waffle House, for that matter... or Sonic). And nine times out of ten, I'll take the Krispy Kreme. Of course, I prefer the Hostess raspberry filled powdered donuts to any of 'em, and I also like Starbucks (not much for coffee, but a caramel apple cider in the winter is the s***), so what do I know?

I like Starbuckles. But I like "my" little coffee place that faces an ally near the UW campus better... better coffee-shop atmosphere, better views, better coffee. Cheaper, too. The only bad thing is the homless crazies that invariably waltz by... but I'm usually there with friends, so it's all good.

I don't have much to say on the topic... I watched the movie, shrugged, and went back to my McDonalds on monday/Taco Bell on tuesday/Arby's on wednesday/etc. routine... it's worked for me so far.

Actually, KK really didn't show up here 'till about 6 years ago. I first ran into them in Jax. The glazed KKs are WAAAAAAYYYYYY too rich for me, and the other doughnuts juat suck. Other than a mom 'n pop bakery, you'll not find a better doughnut than Dunkin'.

i have a bucky's card. every saturday when i go on my weekly grocery haulin trip (we don't have a car...i go on the Muni bus with backpack to Trader Joe's and Safeway)...i go to bucky's and have a triple shot vente capuccino dry and a scone. this is my quiet time. i sit in the very comfortable bucky's armchair in the back of the store by the back window and when i'm finished with my freakin bucky's scone (pumpkin is best but i like the tiny littel 3 vanilla scones for a dollar seventy five too) i go outside where there are tables and (OMG) ASHTRAYS and have a smoke and call a friend or something.

I personally avoid Dunkin Donuts and KK. Maybe it's the DD in my town, but their pastry products (are they actually supposed to be doughnuts?) don't taste any better than the Little Debbie stuff in the 7-11. There are still a few bakeries nearby where I can purchase tasty donuts that are MUCH bigger and MUCH more fattening!

And if the bakery is closed, I can always pick up some Taskykake goodies anywhere (in the Philadelphia area anyway)

I think Krispy Kreme folded in my area. A bunch of them opened soon after the company went public a few years ago, but recently they've all disappeared.

listen...this is a coffee town. we drink gallons of it a day. we don't give a dood doddamn who makes it. there's five coffee shops that AREN'T bucky's with in a block radius of my studio at the bottom (and i do mean BOTTOM) of Nob Hill. thats just within a one block radius.

i can hit more than a dozen just on my way from my place to Union Square (a less than ten minute walk). 3 of those are bucky's. the rest are all just cafe's.

and what i drink costs the same at all of them.

a buck for a regular cuppa joe...4 bucks (including tip, i always tip a buck) for a triple shot cap dry.

See, this is the problem with Starbucks "peoples." They slowly develop a strange, coffee-based language that I find completely incomprehensible. What exactly is a "triple shot cap dry?" Is that Starbuckian for "brown cocker spaniel"; let's see...*adjusts universal translator* Damn thing!

Okay, I admit it: it’s my fault that I’m coffee illiterate.

See, one time in London, I was at some Cornish pastry story, getting one of their sandwiches and an espresso. I ordered a "large" one; having no experience with espressos, I expected something, well, at least medium-sized. Of course, it was a tiny cup, hardly bigger than my thumb. I asked the checkout clerk, "What does the small look like?!"

Just order an Americano. It's what Italian waiters used to make for American tourists to shut them up - 2 shots espresso, fill the rest of the cup with hot water. It's still pretty good (better than Folger's, anyway), and your server doesn't have to hear you go on about the size of the cup.

(Am I a coffee snob? Well, I won't have an espresso machine in my kitchen 'till I can afford a pump model...)

I'm not a coffee drinker so I've no idea what 's expensive and what isn't. I know I blow money on crap every day--who doesn't?

well...here it is...see...coffee makes you talk in spurts. like shorthand.
so...they have 3 sizes at most places...usually using italian here in SF...lots of italian cuisine here...anyway...3 sizes...tall, grande, and vente.
most cappucinos are double shot...2 shots of espresso. tall can be one but heftier if 2. so...what i order is how the barrista has to make it.

triple shot (3 shots of espresso)
in a vente sized cup (bout 8 oz.)
capuccino (there is less warm milk and more foamed milk, latte is the other way around, more warm milk with just a dab of foam on top)
dry (meaning really really dont put steamed milk, just foam).

triple shot vente cap dry. voila.

Yeah, but they're not waiters at Starbucks, they're cashiers.

Believe me, I believe in overtipping, but I wouldn't tip at Starbucks for the same reason I wouldn't tip at Taco Bell.

in a coffee shop, if there is a tip jar, i put a buck in.

i don't care what anybody else does. i don't care if it's "correct" or not.

Sometimes I do the same thing in a pizza place with a tip jar.

Generally I tip too much at restaurants. I can appreciate what it's like to bust your ass at work.
