What an amazing fucking episode. This season is definitely better than 2. I'm really at a loss for words. Amazing TV. Hell, amazing story-telling. This would be one fantastic novel.

So: I think the flashbacks are over. The rest of the series will move forward. Desmond seeing the future was the first glimpse that a change had happened this season. The Hatch blowing up (and Desmond saving everyone) was the beginning of the change. Now we will see the present and the future catch up with each other. Jack's choice (and Locke's) is the most important moment of the entire series.

The only thing I saw coming was
Spoiler
Jack's flash-forward. That they wouldn't tell us who died gave that away.
As for the rest, I'm quite pleased. Go Hurley!
Spoiler
Hey...did anyone else note that "future" Jack said his Father was still alive? What up with that? How could it be?
Spoiler
He was just trying to get his prescription filled. When the pharmacist called his bluff he gave up.
Spoiler
So, is the show now called Lost because they're NOT on the island?

I was hit with an epiphany this morning as I woke up.
Spoiler
Naomi is from an alternate but parallel dimension of which the island is a nexus. In this dimension, Jack's Dad is still alive (Jack told the bald doctor to call upstairs "I promise he'll be drunker than me"), Drive Shaft was a successful band (Naomi told him about the big tears and records), Kate's role is nolonger one of criminal, and 815 went down and was found. In this parallel dimension, things are different but not ENTIRELY different. They are different enough though to make Jack realize that it was a mistake. When they agree to be extracated, they get off the island allright, but to a different NOW than what they expect.

Walt=smokey=JACOB. I will swear to this.

Locke WILL NOT go with Jack if they are rescued. I expect that this storyline will intertwine...that they will show us the (possible) future based on the choice Jack made with Naomi, and also the current now intermittantly as the reveral of the rescue is engineered by future Jack and Locke.

I kept saying to myself, Dang, Jack looks older, when did he have time to look that raggedy and become so strung out?

The Recap special Answers, actually did tell us the flashforwards were coming "By the time the series is done, we will have shown you the past, present and future of the characters"

I'm not sure about the alternate dimension. I'm also not sure they would reveal so early on that Jack and Kate make it to the end of the series alive. I think perhaps, this was showing his possible future, according to the hangups he currently has, but, not neccessarily the real future (Although maybe, the Island is now the flashbacks?)

Naomi was Dharma, the ship is the return of Dharma, and Jack will have to be a great leader who walks amongst them, but, isn't one of them as they join forces to fight the real bad guys Dharma, who are pissed and looking for revenge for what Ben did to them, IMHO. I actually figured (Back at the tattoo episode) that the finale would be showing the merging of the two tribes, and that Ben would be dying to make room for Jack as the leader, except, that kinda goes a bit wicky now considering Locke's relationship with Jacob and he's obviously on the outs with Jack.

Why do we spoiler everything in this thread? Our speculations aren't spoilers. What already happened on a broadcast show isn't a spoiler. Weird.

I'm leaning toward the alternate universes theory myself. The interpretation of quantum mechanics that states everytime a measurement event occurs (or a choice on the macro scale), the universe splits off into another very similar universe. So there are 1000s of different versions of ourselves out there in different universes. Something like that. Maybe Desmond's key-turning event opened up the ability to traverse these alternate paths.

It's strange that Ben was right. Naiomi was lieing. Does this mean Ben is really "good?"

If they can go back, as Jack wants in his flashforward, then this opens up the possibility that anyone dead can come back. I'm hoping we'll see Boone, Shannon, and Charlie again.

Re: Ben...it depends on relative to what. Is he intrinsically "good"? No way...he is a mass murderer (and I believe it was he who was in the coffin...it wasn't very big) after all. However, if you mean "good" relative to keeping a cross-dimensional infraction from occurring or the island from being comprimised in some way, maybe you are right. Ben also is no longer a leader of any sort...his people are ALL DEAD. He set it in motion. He now needs Jack and the rest as much as anyone.

Future Jack is going to find a way to prevent NOW Jack (and Kate and the rest save for perhaps Aaron and Claire) from getting on the helicopters. My guess? THE NUMBERS. He will somehow use the numbers...perhaps by talking to Hugo. The numbers are IMO some sort of equation or probability influncing string that predicts the opening of the pocket dimension that is the ISLAND.

That's right...our island IMO is a pocket dimension that serves as a switching station between laternate realities and times. Sound good?

But what about the alien landing strip?
Hee hee.

It seems like Lost needs some new backdrop for each season. Season one was the island and the characters themselves. Season 2 was the hatch. Season 3 was the Others. Now, Season 4 will be...those aboard the freighter? That's my guess. If they are the bad guys, then are they Dharma? Are they Penny's dad's company? Is Widmore and Dharma the same?
Interesting things:
Spoiler
Yeah, the dad thing. Could Christian be alive? We saw him walking around the island in season 1, but with all the other freaky things, we just assumed it was ol' Smokey. Do we have any idea about how long Jacob has been around? Could Jacob and Jack's dad be the same? Remember Jack's dad having long hair before he died. Didn't Jacob as well in the stills?
In the Looking Glass, why did Penny come up first on the screen? Was she trying to reach the island with her team of folks, but couldn't until the jamming was done? Or did the communication happen the other way 'round, and Penny was at her dad's business or whatnot? If so, does that mean the Others were monitoring the Widmores, or in cahoots?
Sad to see Charlie go.
And is Mikhail the Terminator? Is he going to be back next season with his metal parts showing?
Very weird, not at all disappointing.

Brilliant Finale - i guessed it was future jack though, only his Dad being alive is a sticking point.

I was thinking it might have been Jack's funeral - as everyone was thought dead on the plane, but i doubt it now.

Kate said ''he' would wonder where she was. She ends up with Sawyer?

Best line - ''That was for taking the kid from the raft''
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

I know alot of people at work who either TiVo it or wait until the DVD comes out to watch it. So maybe that's the reason for the carefulness in using the spoiler.

In this vein, I had a thought about Jack's dad.
Spoiler
If Jack's dad is really still alive, then something happened on that island to change reality. Maybe Desmond's key turning or maybe the decision to contact that "rescue" boat. I thought the Chief of Surgery's reaction to Jack's demand to get his father down there, "and if I am drunker than he is, then fire me" was quite interesting. Maybe his reaction was b/c in this alternate reality, Jack's dad isn't a drunk and never was a drunk. That would explain too why Kate is seemingly free...in an alternate reality, she isn't a fugitive.

I heard a rumor about flashbacks, and how that would change next season. Is this the first of many flashforwards? To their possible future, and how in the present, they are trying to mend it? Or at least bend it to their will.

Yes, brilliant 2 hour finale. (see, this is what a finale is all about, Heroes writers) Random thoughts: gladly I didn't see any of this coming, I was amazed when I saw future Kate. I think it was Sawyer in the coffin. Great to see Ben beat up; I was clapping. So, Locke has problems killing his dad who tried to kill him, but he has no qualms about killing a stranger young lady? He could have been more coy and wave to folks as he slowly walks towards Namoi and spins and grabs the phone and smashes it before anyones reaction. Sad to see Charlie go just as I was starting to like the hobbit. Maybe he will heal up and get out via the port hole. Also cheered when Hurley mowed down the bad guys. Kinda wish Sawyer didn't shoot what's his name, but it was a good couple of lines. Top notch all around.

Lastly re spoilers, what are people who haven't seen the show coming here in the first place right after a season ender? True spoilers are those like posts that show who is signed up for next season. :)
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

some other people have lloked at screen caps and seem to think that the name of the dead man was JEREMY BENTHAM... could be a false name or a new character?

I'm tellin' ya... Parallel Universe.

In response to my own post about the manipulatable flash forwards...wasn't that already set up this season with Desmond saving Charlie over and over again? And not only that, Locke said, "You weren't supposed to do that." Sure, he's said things similar in the past, like about the hatch about it not supposed to be this way or something, but I think Locke is having future flashes as well.

Just a thought.

I sure hope it's NOT parallel universes. For the life of me, I can't think of one logical reason why a dozen thousand versions of us should exist. I decided a few years ago that alternate unis is a sorry excuse to explain away dead ends in one's plot. Creative license expired on this back in the days of Sliders. Bizarro Lost? No thanks.

As far as the confusion with Jack's father, that all came from Jack, who possessed the motivations of an addict. He could also be messed up by the island. How many times do you think the island tried to keep him from leaving by haunting him with his dad?

That doesn't mean I won't watch if they do. The creators have earned my loyalty for another season.

IMO, dead characters should stay dead. Excepting Mikhail, of course (makes you wonder about Richard and some of the pre-purge Others).

Charlie was empowered by the surety of his fate. He knew that no matter what else occurred he'd save both Claire and Aaron as Desmond predicted.

Jack's Dad is not the only support for a parallel unverse theory, btw.
