What worked:

The battle. Holy frak, that was awesome!

Laura's death, and Adama sitting on the hillside alone. Very moving.

Starbuck typing in the coordinates using the number sets from the song.

Cavil, Boomer et al got what was coming to them.

Baltar's line "I know farming."

What didn't work:

When it all came down to it, Baltar speaks for humanity? Are you frakking kidding me?

Starbuck's ambiguous ending, and no resolution with Leoben.

No good explanation about Hera.

As I said before, after the crap that we were forced to watch the last few weeks, the finale would have to be extraordinary to be worth it. It was not. It was only as good as I expected it to be. Yeah, it was good.

Best moment in the whole series? Galen killing Tory. That was sweet. That made me feel very, very good.

Let's face it, whether we like it or not, Baltar is the poster child for human frailty. That worked really, really well, because he proved that even the biggest, most self-absorbed screwup could be redeemed. I thought that was excellent. I thought the fact that all of humanity is half Cylon (which I called) worked well as well. The cycle will repeat itself again.

Overall, I felt that Moore treated his characters with absolute respect and consistency, and didn't spoon-feed us a nice, neat, wrapped up package. I think I would have felt insulted if he had.

I really didn't like the idea that 38,000 people would suddenly give up all their goodies and live off the land (and WTF happened to all the Raptors and stuff?), but again, it worked with the flow of the series.

But the dying leader did deliver them to Earth.

And I went nuts when the Chief choked the crap out of Tori.

I'm satisfied with it.

It's a bold step for a SciFi show to actually allow "God" to exist and not explain 'The higher Power" away with technology. Sure, there's still room to interpret a higher civilization that isn't actually God, but, God is the easiest explantion.

What explanation was needed for Hera? She's half Cylon, so she can project, and she gets information from the higher power just like the others do?

Yeah, I thought Hera was explained quite well.

I'm even OK with RDM borrowing from Charlie on LOST for Kara to come up with the jump coordinates, because it was well executed, IMHO

I really enjoyed the Centurions marching arm in arm with the Colonials and the old style toasters were cool to see too.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more pleased I am with the way it wrapped things up. The last few episodes really had me worried that it was going to just sputter out like B5 did, but I can honestly say that some time next week when my gf and I are at the end of the series, I'll look forward to watching the finale again.

One of the few areas we disagree my Haruchai friend. I still believe B5 was the king of all arc'ed shows, and it's finale the perfect finale, and had the best arc wrap up of any series.

But yes, the more time I take to absorb the BSG finale, (and taking time to distance myself from my own theories of how it should've ended) the more I am growing to appreciate it

I was impressed that they made the claim. God was at work. Nice that they weren't wishy-washy about it.

Yea, a more balanced lead up would've been better. The Ellen Resurrection episode should've been spread out over the 3 episodes, it would've blended much better, too much of an information dump 3 eps too early.

Well, that and Ellen's bizarre split personality.

Sind, I'd agree with you about B5 if they'd left it at the end of Season 4, or if they'd concentrated more on the Drakh and the Centauri and completely cut the awful Teep war. Oh, and Lochley was awful as well. Really, there's (to me) about 6 watchable episodes in Season 5.

In BSG there were 3 episodes in Season 4 which I didn't enjoy, but there wasn't a single character I hated as much as I hated Byron.

S5 was uncertain, so S4, ended 3 or 4 eps too early, and S5 started cold, as a result. Upon repeated viewings, Lockley's not so bad, IMHO as first believed. Oh, and Byron was meant to be hated, it sets up Lyta, and the Teep War (Which was supposed to be Theatrical release) as well as the Telepath Trilogy of Books, and some events that were meant to play out in Crusade.

Yeah, I know all that.

But after season 3 & 4 kicked so much ass, season 5 was a tremendous letdown.

But to be fair, my S5 DVDs haven't been opened yet, and I haven't seen those episodes since they aired.

Hurm, WAY back in season 2 I theorized that head baltar and head six were representatives of the Cylon God, and I totally forgot about it after all the bricks I shat since Season 2 ended.

Honestly, there isn't a character I felt could have been wrapped up better. (Boomer's end and Baltar's end were extremely poignant.) John's end too was very shocking to me. (OH FRAK!)

There is one thread that still puzzles me. (maybe 2) What is all the Kara Thrace = Harbinger of death business? The majority of Season 4 set up Kara Thrace destroying humanity, not saving it. Was this *god* driving her to the action she needed to make to save humanity? I don't really buy it. I also wish they had played up her sudden awareness near her end a little better.

Also - I guess they never put the continents of earth into view at the fakeout in the midseason finale, they definitely did at the end of season 3. Sure as hell fooled me though. (I was half convcinced they would get sucked into the black hole into a new universe/alternate timeline/ their own past/future)

Having the Colonials feature as home sapiens (sapiens) interbreeding with Neanderthal man was a very nice touch. So was Ron Moore reading about Mitochondrial Eve. Allthough, isn't there a functioning spacecraft remnant (at least one raptor) left to find on Earth? I was also DAMN happy to see Helo alive. He's always been maybe my favorite character.

You know, I've been pretty consistent in my assertion that Saul was the most interesting, complex character on the show, but doing this re-watch now, Helo really stands out as the show's conscience, even more so than Lee. I too was very pleased that he got to live happily ever after.

Kara was the harbinger of death...to the vast majority of the Cylons.

Yeah! dlb and I txt throughout each episode. (At least we used to... ) I got a late start this time, and was maybe 15 minutes behind him watching it. I think it was over for him at the point we saw mommy, daddy, and baby walking on earth, and I txted, 'HE'S ALIVE!! " Very good moment!
