|G Thank you so much everyone. Bob and I had a long talk today. We skipped church because he still felt too sick, and I went out to pick up my daughter from an all-night cast party (she was in Annie) and by the time I got home I had my fill of military checkpoints and sat down and we talked for a couple of hours. I did tell him how I was feeling, and he talked about the stresses he has which are also pretty phenomenal, and it was such a good time to just reconnect.

Spent the afternoon napping first, then gardening, then cooking mac & cheese for dinner.

Iz gud day. :)

Now, Jenn... are you talking face-to-face with anyone about your work stress?

Aliantha, more bookcases and loading them sounds like a great plan!!

deer, glad you had a good day this time, hope it goes on being better :bestwishes:

aliantha, particularly strange they have such an attitude about the quality of software in such a firm. If the computers are used only to handle documents, Linux+LibreOffice is security+reliabilty. If they're afraid to move to anything, at least what I said earlier - you can recommend them to install LibreOffice at least as a doubling system to remove "a couple more months of angst" that had to not even appear on the horizon to start with.

Sound advice, Effa, but maybe you are forgetting that IT guys know everything and while they want the newest toys, change comes very, very slow. "Linux" is reserved for them to play with at home so they can sound cool.

It's not just the IT guys -- the problem is that the legal community in general uses Word as the standard. If I suggested to these guys that we install Linux, I'm pretty sure their heads would explode. 8O

Menolly, the .docx files are being sent to us by the clients. So no, we can't exactly tell them, "We're a couple of software generations behind and can't handle the stuff you've sent us, but we really are a world-class law firm so don't fire us, okay?"

Anyway. Enough about last week's stupid computer problems. I'm sure I'll have a whole new crop to tell y'all about in a few hours. :(

DotD, glad you followed our advice and I'm *really* glad it didn't backfire on you! And never fear -- loading a new bookcase is not going to be a problem...

Exhausted. Short week though...Friday is a public holiday, and so is next Tuesday, and work has given us Monday off. So just have to last 'til Thursday, then 5 days off, then a 3 day week.

Nice, Av! 8) Next US holiday isn't until the end of May. :( By which time I need to have Magickmaker's top done, because she's planning on wearing it to a wedding. I guess I'd better suck it up and get busy.... All I need to do is finish knitting the trim, and then sew it on. But I bought all this new yarn, and it's calling me....

The Vader got promoted today. Went from being head of the English department to head of all foreign languages.

I am now in command of the English, French, Russian, Latin and Spanish (currently not offered at our school) staff. Together with a little mortgage we finally paid off last month there'll be a considerably larger sum left in our pockets each month - in other words there won't be so much month left at the end of the money.

Congratulations Vader, on both counts. Isn't it lovely when you finally get the mortgage paid off? :D

Congrats, Vader! :)

And happy b-day to DotD's newly-legal son! :)

Today I've been musing a little on some depictions of the male gaze in art I've encountered recently. This is of course nothing but a shameless plug, since I seem to have lost the knack I used to have for not caring that no one ever reads my blog.

Your piece made me think of a line from a the cure song
And this is why I hate you
And how I understand
That no-one ever knows or loves another
Or loves another
I agree with this idea that we never really know another person or love them for more than what they are to ourselves. I know, I know... I'm not a romantic at all.

Does this mean there will be less of a dearth, Vader?

All wordplay (surely y'all expect some of that from me?) aside, congratulations on both the promotion and on retiring the mortgage. Dam-sel and I paid ours off last fall, and it does make a BIG difference!

Vader, is English a foreign language at your school?

Murrin, your "content is blocked" as are all blogs on my network until 4pm. You reminded me of this:
Paul Simon wrote:People writing songs
That voices never share
Even as a child that line stuck with me when I heard that song. (Sound of Silence)

Ananda, what you say is true.... nevertheless, love anyway.

Read it and commented. 8) (Altho it's not much of a comment, given that I'm barely awake....)

I agree with Ananda. But I think one hallmark of a mature relationship is that you give the other person room to grow, that you're willing to change your perception of who/what the other person is without it tearing the relationship apart. Sounds like Ludovico had such a fixed idea of who Lucia was that he wouldn't let her be anything *but* a mythical beast. But is that a male tendency, or a human tendency? (Maybe I should put all that on your blog, huh? )

As for me: we're celebrating Staff Appreciation Day today. The firm is feeding us. And I might get flowers. 8)
