I'm back from Iceland. Didn't unfortunately meet a handsome mountain giant I could've smuggled back home. They have false advertising in their coat of arms. Nor did we discover the Rainbow Bridge in Bifröst. Otherwise, a very unique country; posting maybe moar about that later.

Some peeps thought I was Irish. Guess they cannot really place a Finnish accent. Which amuses me since in Ireland some mistook me for a Norwegian.

Too bad over the lack of hawties to smuggle back with you, Zormie.

We drove to Torekov today. It was very nice. We also did some shopping and my husband, bless him, bought me a new mop.

So I've had a reallllllly emotional day today.
Ups and downs like crazy; I've been extremely sensitive / flippin' out.
Ocular saline flow of Lindenesque proportions.
A lot of good things happened for me though, I think.

I've come to the conclusion that I feel like I'm betraying people at my old church if I try to bond with and get to know people at the new one.
But that's just a piece of it; I've also just been plain ole mad, stubborn, and irritable.

days of the week have no meaning currently. other than days julie has off. really want the damn walking cast off.

though i do like the cane julie got for me at the auction.

planning for the october trip.

and off of my office i have a den (an alcove realy] we are going to use it to display my art. and pieces that i have picked up. and maybe some other people's art.

julie has most of painted like a mondrian. need to be on my feet to install the work in it. eager for that. then maybe we can have people over to experience the room.

Spent yesterday at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. My gods, who knew there were so many yarn vendors, both stores and manufacturers? Their booths filled several buildings and spilled out all over the fairgrounds. A lot of them were selling spinning supplies, including raw wool and carding tools for the really hardcore -- which just confirmed to me that I won't be taking up spinning any time soon (too much work!).

Would someone please tell me what 0.5 litres is in English? My measuring jug has pints and fluid ounces on one side and something going up in 100s on the other . I used the kettle in the end as that had 0.5L on the bottom. I do wish they would put the proper measurements in these instructions grrrr.

Iolanthe, I use cooking conversion sites like this all the time because I love finding new recipes. I convert the other way, though. I prefer metric measures.

It translates to "half a liter".

All I know is if something's priced in GBP, I need to double it, and then I have the $ amount, more or less.

I only recently learned that a UK pint is not the same as a US pint!! 1/2 litre is about the same as a US pint but a UK pint is 20 oz., I believe? So when Pippin asks, "It comes in pints?" what does he mean?

Yes, a pint is just a bit more than half a litre. I just cottoned on - 0.5 means a half - why on earth didn't it just say half a litre! It was the 0 in front that confused me. I can do that now, it's on my measuring jug.

Beer etc. is served in half and whole pints - 10 or 20 fluid ounces. I used to drink pints when I was at college. 1 pint lasted me the whole evening - boilermakers

I'm tired yet again but today we got our antifatigue mats for copy and print and the registers. They are awesome. They are all new and puffy and springy. Happy Happy Joy Joy! On the down side it was a bit of a trying day. I come in to the story of our tablet thief which was funny (see my blog) and also the fact that we are apparently $100 bucks short from yesterday. I ask both the other managers if they recounted everything and they both claim they have. I decide to just recount anyway. I start with the safe and move on to checking the registers. I don't know how they both missed it but somehow they both had counted register 4 as having a $300 opening float. Only register 1 has that, all others have $200. So I wasted over half an hour recounting everything for a rookie mistake. Figures that register 4 is the last register left and the last one I counted. I actually wanted to count it first but Noe was so busy in the copy center and that is where that register is that I decided to leave it there and count the front registers first. I should have followed my instincts. Anyway, it was frustrating to have to follow up and catch a rookie mistake repeated by both the assistant manager and store manager back to back. GRRR. At least I found the money. We also had some (insert extreme sarcastic tone) fabulous new art students in today. We had three different diva princesses of the cosseted daddy's little princess variety yet obviously exchange students from Asia. None had their files set up correctly, none could speak english when we tried to explain the problem and all got huffy when I gave them attitude back. All had blue contact lenses and were wearing high end art student fashion disasters of epic and expensive proportions. All backed down when I gave them my "not gonna take your shit look." Yep, looks like I have to school a whole new crop of art students. They really don't pay me nearly enough for this job. Seriously.

Get metric. As you've discovered, it's the same as 500ml. UK pints are 568ml. (For some reason.)

OK, got that, Av. Written it all down for future use. Those mls must what the things are going up in hundreds Believe me, it's much easier in feet and inches

It has to do with beer drinking Av. As any seasoned drinker knows 'a pint' is just the correct quantity of beer/lager needed to satisfy the desire, but not enough to render the senses effected. If we purchased in half litres we would always reach the bottom of the glass wanting that little bit more and thus would begin a vicious cycle of ever chasing that 'missed bit' that could only result in drunkuness and ultimately terminal decline for both the individual and society as a whole. If like the Germans we purchased our beer in litres we would never be able to win a war or get an erection and the results would be just as disasterous. Observe any British football crowd in the pub prior to and after a match, and you will see with clarity the sense of what I am saying. Never to drunk to be unable to mount an attack on the opposing supporters yet never to sober to be unable to be lured into whatever far-right party is recruiting on the day, the pint repeatedly demonstrates it's worth as the unit of choice for all right thinking nations.
