Hi everyone

I wanted to take a minute (maybe even a few minutes) to say hello and to tell you what has brought me to this site. I have been Covenant fixated for many many years. I read the first book (showing my age here) back in the 70’s. The trilogies literally changed, and perhaps saved my life. It taught me about loss, salvation and hope in a time when there was none of that for me. Over the years I have turned to those books during difficult times and again found hope in them.

I have moved forward with my life and become somewhat successful (I guess). I run a homeless shelter in NYC and have focused most of my life in social service. But now at this time in my life I am looking back and questioning my decisions. To get to the crux of my visit here…….As I always have, I turned to the Trilogies for comfort but I find it is different now. As I am rereading (actually relistening ) the thing that consistently goes through my mind is that I wish I was there. I wish there was a world where there was such honor and goodness, where we are given the opportunity to be MORE, more than we are. What strikes me now is I will never have that opportunity, I will never know ………………………………

I try to explain to my few close friends these feelings and they all think I am out of my mind. So here I am, where I hope I will find others who can, if not feel as I do, at least understand the depth of these feelings. Please bare with me, I am not as crazy as I appear on paper, just looking for a sympathetic ear.

not true. you do "go there" everytime you read the books. good writing is a conveyance of sorts. and consider...a human man wrote those books.
authors can only write about what they know.
there is honor and goodness in this world.
go to the mirror and smile at yourself, you are a social worker.
rather than wish to be "more" than you are, why not just attempt to be
happy with all you are.

and...by way of encouragement, in the words of stephen king....

there are other worlds than these!

i hope i don't sound preachy.
just wanted you to know that i relate.

It sounds as if you are doing more and being more already. Social work is a difficult (and often thankless) job. You are a light in darkness, and making the world a better place whether you see it or not. Don't lose hope. Don't give in to despair. You know where that leads.

Two comments. The first is that it may not be as important to be more than you are as it is to discover the extent of the beauty of what you already are but may not be able to see. Second, if there is not as much honor and goodness in the world as we would like, all we can do is increase it by one person's worth. But that IMO is no small contribution.

Please note that I also have no intention to be preachy. Rather, I am just intending to share my own feelings on the subject (which are of course no better or worse than anyone else's.)

Hi all

With all the references to Kevin's Watch in the GI on stephendonaldson.com I thought I'd come over and have a look; and hopefully participate to some degree

I've been a fan since 1990 when I friend gave me Lord Foul's Bane to read. The First and Second Chronicles left enough of an impression on me for me to use Linden Avery as the name of my avatar in online games.

I hope mine will be a long and enjoyable stay.
