Peter, I hope you are a writer of humorous books or newspaper columns. You would do well at it.

So I'm alone 3700 miles from home. Part of me wonders if this was a good idea after all.

Believe me, it's much easier in feet and inches

Yup. Millilitres, or 1/1000th of a litre.
Feet and inches are not easier.

The calculations are too confusing. 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, 1760 yards in a mile? Ridiculous.
Compared to 10 millimetres to a centimetre, 100 centimetres to a metre, and 1000 metres to a kilometre. Much easier to work things out.

Oh yeah? Then how come I almost never saw people in pubs having just one pint?

Question: What's the difference between a duck?
Answer:
One leg is shorter than.
I'm in freakout mode because I'm flying out on Wednesday morning. Which means I have until Monday to get report cards in, print out all lesson plans for a substitute, try to find rides to and from airports, make plans for my family, yada yada.
Death, like life, does not happen according to plan or convenience. I am really glad people seem to be understanding that.

Not if your house is built in feet and inches it isn't. Not if your mind works in lbs and ounces. Everything is just a bit too long, or a bit too short in centimetres and litres and things. Anyway, I can't cope with all those noughts, I'm number dislexic. Can't carry more than two numbers in my head at once and often write them the wrong way round

You misunderstand me Av. A pint should be thought of as a 'quanta' is in relation to energy. It's the 'packet size' for beer that nature decreed to be right and produces 'inebriation states' when consumed in numbers that the psyche is content to sit at. Ant attempt to sit between these levels by the consumption of alternative measures is a deviation of natural law and can only result in disaster

I'm feeling pretty top of the world. Just had the best day off ever. Spent the whole day in bed with a beautiful woman. Emerging only for meals. It's now 9:15 and I just got back from walking her home.

VERY happy for you Cambo!
I think this will be my first post in these threads that are about how I feel. But I'm getting desparate. I never had a sinus infection before. I suppose something minor here and there. But I didn't know what they were all about until now. This is horrifying beyond words. Stayed home last M-W. Felt good enough Th-Sat. Sunday, it all started. I went to urgent care Monday, and was given azithromycin. Yesterday, I felt worse than ever, so I went back. 100.4 temp, and pressure, particularly on the left side, that those of you who've had it understand. Cheek bone and teeth on that side hurt. Cat scan was done, because she didn't understand why I was worse on the third day of z pack. Nothing other than a bad sinus infection. Got levofloxacin, because it's stronger. So it's the end of my third sleepless night. Maybe an hour or two total the previous couple, but none at all last night. I've been up every hour, drinking chamomile tea, eating oatmeal, holding very hot towels on my face. I'm actually clear at times, although the pressure is always there. Problem is I have sleep apnea, and I can't put the mask on because the pressure is this bad without it.
So any helpful hints? Before I end up in a hospital due to exhaustion?

Sorry Fist, no helpful hints, but giving you one of these

Deer....
And Murrin... hello there. I understand how you feel. Traveling alone can sometimes be lonely and challenging. If you're near the beginning of your trip, you may 'just' be a bit jetlagged and in need of a couple of days adjusting. I adjust walking slowly around galleries, sitting in parks or eating. If Ananda's prostitute suggestion doesn't work out, perhaps try one of these? But seriously, I've booked my annual leave for October but I haven't booked my flight to the USA yet and your email inspired me to be honest about why. I've travelled heaps on my own, trekked through Nepal, backpacked through Europe, but as I get older, I do find I get more fearful, sensitive to loneliness. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but the thought of leaving my kitties for a month is what's most holding me back from booking the flight! Anyone with pets knows what great companions they can be.
Anyway Murrin, excuse the ramble, I just wanted to tell you I know how you feel and to just get on out there, go to a pub or a cafe or a show, anywhere with other people. You'll soon warm up and have a ball, but don't worry if the odd day you get a little homesick. Good luck!

Four things come to mind immediately
I would try cold press instead of hot press. With all my back problems one of my drs told me that heat enflames, cold reduces inflammation. Other drs. disagree but it is worth a try.
Inhale steam as much as possible 2-3 times a day.
Use a Neti-pot. They are weird at first but really help with congestion.
Lastly you did not mention pain killers. Tylenol does not reduce swelling so stick to ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen. Try mucenex to thin the mucus. And sleep with your head elevated or in a comfy chair.
Hope you get to feeling better soon, Fist.

You deserve every single minute of happiness you can eek out of this life. And your lady friend is very lucky.

Had one a few weeks back as an after-reaction to a head cold. Took three Duacts per day + cortison nasal spray, sauna, and some azithromycin which seemingly killed it in a few days. Get better soon!

Jet lag, yay. Woke up at 4:30 and only managed to stay in bed for another hour before giving up.
Felt better about the trip after taking a walk, but still think I maybe picked the wrong time of year to come here. Some of the tourist stuff I was going to do might be pretty deserted, especially if it keeps raining.
I never did come to a solution to the problem I have going to eat in places I've never been before. Can't eat Burger King and KFC all week.

You shouldn't have much problem finding good food in Toronto in all different price ranges, Murrin. I imagine they have to have some guide to their restaurants. Also, it is supposed to be one of the top theater cities in North America. Go see a play. Here's a site that looks like it offers
ticket deals.

Nasty, Fist, and especially the first time. I had a bad bout before Xmas, but I've had sinusitis attacks all my life so I'm used to it. And glands - soon as I sneeze my chin disappears and the front of my neck doubles its size !
I too go with Ibuprofin for the pain. The only other thing I do is to have a lemsip three or four times a day to ease the congestion - can you get those where you are? But I don't think you could have Ibuprofin and lemsip at the same time.
As for sleeping, I have to nap when I can if it gets bad, and I simply stay in bed and read, napping for a couple of hours here and there.
Can you get these?
Excellent for inhaling etc.
And this
Stinks if you rub it on then go out, but it works!
Good luck.

Murrin, why not go to a dance club or a pub and meet some locals and find out more from them? Youre a fresh young thing. Go get your boogie on and do a Cambo tonight (no, not literally do Cambo).
