Julie and I love old cemeteries. I offered her different things and she picked that out of them. they were all quite beautiful and peaceful.

to prove our love of history, a few weeks ago I researched all the ghost towns in Calhoun, Texas. the most famous being Indianola. well we found all the markers.

we had to pass through Matagorda county to get to Calhoun so we stopped at our first Ghost town there. first called Demmings Bridge then Hawley. all that is left from that era is the Hawley Cemetery. they still have a piece of the Demmings Bridge on display there. a friend from work (my old unit) is buried there as well. she was a c/o that worked for me.

a prominent Texan is buried at Hawley, Shanghai Pierce. there is a statue of him at his grave. a very impressive statue.

then we stumbled across the site of Elliots Ferry in Matagorda. near Palacios we discovered the place that Fort Hulen was. an important military camp in WWII. those two places we discovered by stopping at the historical markers.

once in Calhoun we found the places I had mapped out. Cox's Point, Linnville, Indianola and Green Lake.

along the way in Calhoun we also found the marker for the San Antonio & Mexican Gulf Railroad, First Presbyterian Church of Port Lavaca, Port La Vaca Order of the Eastern Star (Masonic lodge), Port Lavac Vietnam War memorial, and the Zimmerman Cemetery. plus a marker for the home of Angelina Bell Peyton Eberly.

Indianola was a port city lost to two hurricanes. it was were camels ordered by secretary of war Jefferson Davis arrived in 1853. (he was Franklin Pierce's war secretary. Pierce is the only US president to have been born in my native New Hampshire.)

there also is a huge La Salle statue in Indianola. but where the city was, is now in the bay.

we had a blast and plan on picking Texas counties for day trips. we will find the historical markers for their ghost towns. next up is likely the county we live in, the birthplace of Texas, Brazoria county.

the Zimmerman Cemetery is on private land, so we couldn't go see it.

Yes we do! I once found a 17th century slate gravestone up against a wall and behind a tree in absolutely perfect condition in a churchyard just up the road here. Most of our cemeteries tend to date from the 1850s though.

Iolanthe - my grand parents are buried in a cemetery in Weare, New Hampshire that is older than this country. but that is not the norm. they are the last two buried in that cemetery.

and somewhat related, august was the fifteenth year I have been with the prison. 10 at my old unit and five at this one.
