Must be some way to do it with CGI and keep the budget fairly low.

Considering alot of the story is set inside ships, they could easily save money on sets as they don't need much variety. Plus costume cost would be low. The CGI would be the expensive part.

True. Sets and costumes could be done on a very low budget, except for the Amnion.

Yeah, the Amnion would really push costs up - especially Enablement Station.

Maybe they could re-use previous sets - you know, a few special modifications & voila!
Just need a couple of good chippies and an ace set decorator...

I'm not sure the CGI would cost that much actually, the BBC's new sci-fi comedy
Hyperdrive has some pretty impressive CGI and I doubt the budget for that was very big. Also the sets for the new Doctor Who series have been very good, so it seems people are getting better at doing these things on a budget.

Hmm, in that picture the middle bloke looks like Chris Moyles. The thought of Moyles in space gave me the fright of a lifetime.
