It's funny how little people can get by with. I have a friend in his 50's who cannot for the life of himself figure out the filing hierarchies on his laptop, to him it is nothing more than a small, flat typewriter. As for trying to explain the Internet or the Cloud to him; I gave up. The idea that the whole thing was on flat spinning magnetic disks just could not compute with his three-dimensional image of a cloud and space. It was more like a three dimensional universe in his mind, where he though it was stored I didn't dare to ask! 8O

He's well able to use youtube and email, he just has zero idea of the actual physical reality of it. And when someting goes wrong or doesn't work first time he is utterly stumped.

This has the benefit of printing the text you want, without all the forum graphics and background colors, and other posts on the same page. And you can save it onto your computer as well.
Yup, that's what I did with the thread(s) from Seafest Denver in order to preserve them in the scrapbook I did. The real-time posts from that event were almost funnier than the actual goings-on.

30th - third page when I google.

I feel so much better now. I know how to cut and paste - been doing it for years.

Quick Facts:
-Yes, I own kevinswatch.com.
-Yes, it used to be a more content-filled fan site.
-I took it down, mainly out of embarrassment. Most of the content on there was tripe and/or out of date.
-I still have it on a drive somewhere, but have no interest in bringing it back.
-Since the message board was the most active part, it made sense to just link kevinswatch.com to the message board.
-Speaking of which, Vain owns the message board and the server it's on.
-Probably the only cool content-related thing that I had on the old site was a gallery of all of the covers in the Chronicles. I think I had pretty much all of them.

That help?

I remember that old site. And there was a guest book, wasn't there? I believe I posted on it, as did my daughter (IIRC).

Just passed 3000 post for the month.

Just sayin' :yourock:

We're still working on improving the Watch's Google search ranking. I'm afraid my excitement yesterday was premature :( Turns out Av is right (when isn't he? ) and my result was a combination of my browser's history and maybe being logged into the Watch at the time.

Anyway, we knew it'd never be that easy, so continue to link the Watch from wherever you can and we'll see if we can't nudge ourselves up the search ratings.

I know many that can't do it. My father, for one. I just helped him with an attachment in email. Cut and paste is the next thing. He panics and becomes overwhelmed at the thought of cut and paste. Many people that didn't grow up with computers or never owned one (my foster kids) have no idea how to do the fundamentals. And then there are people who are just not interested in learning the fundamentals.

Yeah, I was being a bit hyperbolic with the "anyone who's touched a computer" bit. Still, it surprised me to think someone who posts on message boards didn't know. I mean, posting URLs, images, and such involves copy + paste.

Selecting text is simple - click and drag, peter!
(Or double click to select one word, or triple click to select a whole paragraph, or press ctrl+A to select everything.)

That's an excellent idea.

And yes, see, when the original .com site was still up, we had all that stuff.

(It's being logged into Google that makes the difference U, not the Watch. But if you'd searched for it, and clicked, and not deleted your history and cache etc. then Google is more likely to serve you back the one you already indicated was the right one for you.)

:D

And - Ctrl+X = cut! Useful if you want to move something (don't forget to paste straight away). I can just select something with my mouse and move it to where I want it as well. Double click on a word and it will be selected.

Ctrl+F =find in almost anything, especially PDF files.

Key strokes are so much quicker than using the mouse.

All neat 'tricks' gratefully recieved Io - many thanks! :)

Damn - Just tried to follow Murrin's instructions; I go to the KW page I want, right click, click 'select all' from the box and all the text of the page goes blue, right click again and click 'copy', then the box dissapears and nothing. I get no prompt as to how to choose my document [I even prepared one ready in my 'notebook'], when I right click again the same box comes up [with copy and all] but the 'paste' option is not in full intensity font and doesn't respond in any way if you click it. Flumoxed again!

I generally prefer to highlight just the text I want, then right-click and select copy (or just ctrl-c). Right-clicking a second time in an area that allows text (such as your notepad) should give you a 'paste' option. (ctrl-v works too.)

You have to have your document open, then go right click in your open document and choose paste.

Saying "select all" on the page though will also copy every image and icon and bit of text.

Sorus' suggestion is better for getting only the text.

Move cursor to the start of what you want, (or the end which is often easier), hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor over the text you want. (It will become highlighted.) Then copy, go into your open document, and paste.)

Peter try this:

Put your cursor at the beginning of the text you want to select. Hold down the shift key that gives you a capital letter, hold onto the shift key and use the downwards arrow of the four up, down, left, right arrows. Your text should gradually cover with blue. You can use the left, right and up arrows too depending what you want to cover.

I can't do it on this message board, but in Word I can select a paragraph at a time by holding down the shift key and Ctrl at the same time then using the down arrow. This should be easier than using the mouse pad on a laptop, or a mouse.

Another trick I use a lot is to use the shift and f3 to put a capital letter in front of a word, and if you do it twice you'll make the whole word upper case.

Peter, once you use "copy", the content is stored ready to paste anywhere. You can then go to any place where you can type text, and use "paste" (from a top menu, right click menu, or just pressing Ctrl+V) and it will work.

It won't work if you right click or press the buttons anywhere that isn't a text input place (like notepad, or word, or new post entry box on a forum, etc).
