That'll do - this thread moves so fast! I'm feeling scared and a little frustrated today regrettably. My work runs out as of Friday, but there's sooooo much to do. It was implied that there'd be significant clean up work in July/August for this major project that's been happening. But it seems they changed their mind as I just received an invite to my farewell lunch on Thursday - I guess that's one way of telling me I finish on Friday. I wasn't officially told that I was finishing - but being a lowly contractor, it seems they don't have to show courtesy. It's so frustrating.

Today... I'm not quite as hyper, but still pretty happy, and feeling like there's so many exciting things to do / think about....

Been spending more time outdoors with the kids... sometimes we just go out into the middle of a big field, and scream for fun; and look at each other and laugh.
And I've been getting us to the library more often, which we all love! (Summer Reading program and all)
And I've been taking time for myself to learn things that interest me more!!

So "In Summer-y," (ha-ha) I LOVE SUMMER!

StevieG -- Here's hoping that something turns up for you quickly.

Iolanthe -- I've been feeling kinda cranky lately myself.

Feeling much better today. Went out again yesterday and spent the afternoon with the grandchildren, better than penicillin! Going to do some book binding this afternoon whilst watching Wimbledon. Next week must do some serious gardening!

StevieG - good luck with finding another contract. I take it you are freelance?

The olympic torch will be in Lincoln today. It's travelling round the county at the moment. Might take a peek on the telly between tennis matches.

Speaking of job hunting have I mentioned civil service sucks? If I haven't...fyi........ CIVIL SERVICE SUCKS. So today I have to spend the day screening job applicants for casework positions. Here's how it works in in the civil disservice world. They put out a list of those people that passed the casework exam. They are interviewed top score down. You sit in a large room with any other facility that is hiring. Two weeks ago you submit four questions to personnel you want to ask the applicant. They screen the questions to ensure they are not racist, sexist, agist, yada yada yada. So you sit there and personnel brings in the first three candidates, all at once. You ask them the prescreened questions. They answer, each one listening to the others answers. You MAY NOT ask them any other follow-up questions, you MAY NOT speak to them in any other way. They leave the room. You MUST now select one of the three. No choice. One of them must get the position. It is called the One in Three Rule. Then they bring in the next three....on and on. Civil Disservice Sucks.

I have a small consulting company - about 6 of us. We generally do Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) work (kind of like Google Earth on steroids) - mapping, asset/database management etc. Not terribly exciting to describe, but it is actually good fun!

Anyway, further to my story, it turns out that one of the other contracted employees was supposed to be leaving 3 July, but he is apparently taking over my role (he's young, cheap etc). And would you believe it, he's the manager's nephew! The pieces are starting to fall into place. This follows on a little from your civil service story lorin, with a slight tangent. All positions must be anti discrimination, all must be advertised at least internally so that interested parties have an equal chance of getting it. Somehow, the nephew strolls into this role without any of this?

I am so glad you asked! It is one of my favourite sweets. I don't take one often since they are so rich, but they are so good!

Um, so, around here these days: Batty is still in residence, getting her teeth fixed. Shara_Lunison is driving up for the weekend. I'm sure that since the party's clearly at my house, that means Magickmaker will be over a bunch, too. She came over last night to eat pizza with us, and then we watched "Food Inc." (she may be off chicken now, too ), and then she finally admitted (at 10pm!) that the kinda-sorta real reason she had come over was to get me to help her with filling out a financial form, because the thought of doing it herself was giving her a migraine. So I did that, and then I still had to stay up and draft a blog post for somebody else's website because it's due today. So I didn't get to bed 'til about 2am.

I finally procured another skein of that fabulous yarn -- except it's a different dye lot and so the colors are a lot brighter than the first one. A *lot* brighter. Like, the new skein looks like a bag of Starburst candies. Definitely not the effect I was going for... But I'll use it anyway. Sigh.

The sisterhood at my shul back in Gator Town started offering Nutella-filled hamentaschen for Purim, once I suggested it as a filling. For some reason, the existence of Nutella filled cream doughnuts does not surprise me. If I ever decide to fry some sufignyot for Hanukkah, I just may give Nutella filling a try...

Nutella filled donuts are a good idea if you don't mind how fat they are! that stuff is pure fat. it is good, though. But, not something to ever bring home!

i passed my exit test (needed a 70, got an 84) so i was officially the last sergeant in TDCJ to graduate from the sergeants retreat. i had avoided it for 7 years.

would have had a higher score if i studied more in state of jawjacking and writing poems...

sunday : julie drove me to Sam Houston State College. past the graveyard where the bury inmates whose families can't or won't pick them up.

then we went to the Walls unit in the middle of downtown Huntsville. got to see the original two wings that are now shut down. horses bunked on the ground floor, the inmates on the 2nd floor and the bosses on the 3rd floor.

got to see the original death row housing. (it's moved to Polunsky unit now) and saw the bed where they gave the lethal injection. very small room, that.

ran a simulation drill where I was the top surviving rank. (my road dog was stabbed) - on thursday we had a mock trial where the inmate who done it was found not guilty. bad paperwork on my part.

had fun, ran into some folks i knew, enjoyed the focus they had on laundry, food service (me).

tomorrow we return home at some point.

Coincidence! I ate Nutella straight from the jar the other night. And drank champagne. But it was in a glass.
