Sorry to hear that, Lore.
Sarge. . . sounds like she's raking you over the coals. Aren't there laws about landlords, and certain things they must provide, i.e. heat? I would think there are. . . Anyway, hope that things go smoothly, and the days pass quickly.

The sad part is his 'chirpy' behaviour before his last trip...poor kitty, I'm tearing up and I'm not even a cat person...
This is why I vowed never to own another pet. My last pet (cat) died when I was 13 - I'd had Sam since I was 4. Even my guinea pig's death left me shattered. Haven't had an animal since. Hell, I cry when I watch Discovery Channel documentaries and something bad happens to an animal...
awww. Elfy. the chirpy part was the best part. he was the clear-eyed, large and in-charge Church i want to remember rather than that sad old man in pajamas, wandering the hall dazedly wondering which apartment is his.
these two cats are my last cats
i might get some mice if we ever move to a house where i can have them.
i like their little hands. (note to self: get girl mice, boy mice are stinky)
raymond is 3 years younger than Church and is much more of a hellion.
when he goes i'm never doing this again. urg.
and i want to thank all of you for the well wishes. i know many of you have been where i'm at today and i appreciate how kind you've all been to me about this.
thanks for bein good pals, one and all.

Luci, something like this?
Named Coco and Cookie, respectively. At the time of this picture, these little girl mice were 2 months old.
Here's another picture of Cookie a few days afterwards... the little critter had just learned that human hands are nice and warm
And this is yet another mouse, whom a friend of mine named Toffee... she also learned that human hands are nice to nestle in, but additionally, she learned that being petted is very pleasant:

Luci -
So sorry to hear that... I know that's just about the hardest decision you can make. Church had a long and happy life, and I'm sure he would thank you for everything.

i have a friend who has mouses, and i asked my boss (owner of the company) if we could have a couple in the warehouse and he said ok...so robert (my friend) brought me two of the cutest little guys!! they were BLONDE mice!!! sooo cute. two males. i named them Merry and Pippin.
but...alas...the warehouse manager made me get rid of them. they totally stank up the warehouse!!!! LOL!!!!

Oh, Luci, I'm not the one who named them... these mice were born in the animal facility of my institute, and I "saved" them (under the guise of performing ongoing behavioural experiments). A friend of mine on the net once saw their pictures and asked me their names, and was a bit upset when I told her they were "#43", "#45" and so on... so she renamed them. Here you saw Coco and Cookie, both of whom lived a happy life; then there are Cinder and Coal, who recently turned 6 months old; there is Sooty, also known as the Nurse Mouse, due to her kindness in bringing food to sick mice she shares the cage with; there are Toffee and Treacle, the newest additions.

Weird mice you found... ours don't stink

How did you house them? Standard laboratory housing for mice consists of special plastic cages of different sizes (depending on how many mice you want to keep in each of them) with wood (pine) shavings on the bottom, and a metal cage ceiling with an indentation where to put food and a water dispenser. Mice are also given nesting material (in the form of a handkerchief they like to tear up into pieces) and toys to play with (running wheels, plastic igloos, and so on). They don't stink that much - sure, you might want to wash the cage and change the wood shavings every one or two weeks, but if the cage is big enough it may take one month before it actually starts stinking noticeably. And once mice get used to your smell, they stop pooping and peeing in your hand when you pick them up.
Truth be told, there's something touching in the thought of holding such a little life in your hand... and it's very nice when mice start trusting you enough that they'll climb into your hand on their own, and then nestle in your palm so you can pet them

The only problem with mice is that they have short lives

They live for one year and a half or so...
Incidentally, I was at an animal course where the instructor explained that rats are far more intelligent and cooperative than mice, because they aren't as skittish as mice, they learn much faster how to do something in an experiment, and so on... and I started thinking how anthropocentric that view is. From an objective point of view, I'd say that mice are actually the smartest of the two, since they aren't so keen on cooperating in animal experiments which can hurt them!

Aw, Luci. I've missed a lot because the last few weeks have been madness. I'm sorry to hear that Church passed, but I'm glad you have good memories. *hugs*
As for me, I feel sick. I called my boss and took the afternoon off -- wasn't doing anything I wouldn't have to redo tomorrow, it was all junk. But at least I have a little time to visit the Watch. Missed you guys.

I feel bad today.
Had to buy a new TV, cos my one has gone to the great TV graveyard in the sky (which was bad enough).
BUT, when I was wheeling it out of the shop on a trolley, I didn't see a little girl of about 9, and ran her over with the trolley

. That was bad enough, but whilst I was apologising profusely I noticed she had a cochlear implant - so she didn't even hear me coming. No harm done physically, but it has made me feel bad all day.
Goodness knows how the girl felt - her mother said she was ok, but I'm still upset about the whole thing.

Phantasm, sweetie, it was an accident. Accidents happen. It was not your fault but a conjunction of bad timing. You know and she knows that you didn't do it on purpose so don't worry. There's nothing you can do to erase it so just let it go darling. I'm sure she's fine and no harm done. Now smile!

Thanks for the emotional crutch there Jenn. I know it was an accident, and God knows it won't be the last one I'm involved in, but I will give you a smile.

Well, if you need some extra cheering up, just think! I am gonna spend my day Sunday taking calendar photos just so YOU can have a Jenn calendar! It's the least I can do for the president (and only member) of my fan club! HEHEHEHEHEHEH!

I can't wait - do I get a sneak preview before it goes to press?

I am miserably hung over...last night was our work Xmas do (who da f**k organises a piss-up mid-week? Sheesh...) so I went too hard, too long, too wild...eep.
Now I'm sending down paracetamol snipers to obliterate that little as$hole who's drilling on the inside of my skull....oh the pain, the pain...
