My sonnet contains Last Chronicles spoilers, but I'm not gonna apologize for it. Turn away now!!
There you are, lovely mom and lethal chick
Intent and eager to scratch a foul itch
Those Masters nitwits, so blindingly thick
Won't let you smack that damn son-of-a-bitch
Obssessed with finding your beautiful son
You search for clues and signs, messing with time
Hey is it your kid or that Covenant?
Some shout, it's all mad, you've done a great crime
But don't forget you carry a big stick
A white gold ring, too - even Loric's
krill
With hardware like that, you can be a maverick
No need to say "please," just aim for the kill
They don't believe it, friends who just harass
That you possess the brass to kick Foul's ass!
(I've scrupulously tried to observe proper sonnet form, but no one said I had to
talk like Shakespeare.)

High Lord Tolkien wrote:I'm learning all about writing sonnets of hate.
Sonnets of hate are expressly allowed.
matrixman wrote:This could take me a while (-he calmly types, even as cold panic seizes him).
I anticipated that sonnets would not fly off of peoples fingers. So I am giving this one two weeks. Please relax, take a deep breath, and google the Rhyming Dictionary. [edit]oops - I see it wasn't so bad as you made out!

Auleliel, StevieG, matrixman, awesome job. And iambicly pentametered as well, right? kudos.
And I thought as I posted this it would be too tough!

Rats, I missed Stevie's on the last page! <pages back to read>
Nice job, Stevie!
Boy, WF, you're going to have some trouble picking a winner...

I certainly hope not! These poems had better be judged by merit, or else THOOLAHns are at an unfair disadvantage.
p.s. Shame on you, Menolly, for bringing politics into a friendly poetry contest!

I've changed a line in my sonnet because it was short a couple of syllables. It seems to flow better now. (Wow, that Shakespeare guy was smart!)
And I forgot to say: good job, Stevie and Auleliel!

All I've got to say is, thank you, Wiki How!

(Written to Linden from the perspective of someone in her real world)
Your bodies lay prostrate upon hard ground
Nearby, the ashes of a bonfire stirred
You live, he’s dead; that fact does not astound
But how, pray tell, was the white ring transferred?
When he was struck, the ring was on his hand
We know not how ‘twas yours when you awoke
Supposedly, you journeyed to “The Land”
And now it’s yours, a gift beyond revoke
In your unconsciousness, you joined with him
You battled evil forces together
When he died (again?) in a cavern dim
Your received the ring and healed the weather…
Although I know that this will sound unkind,
Dr. Avery, have you lost your mind?

Dread Poet Jethro, I found your sonnet to be highly amusing. Nice work.
Congratulations to matrixman and StevieG for your poems too.
I wouldn't want to have to choose between them. Good luck, wayfriend!

Good punchline in the last couplet, Dread Poet Jethro.

Thanks, Auleliel
Your effort, Steve’s and Neo’s
Are all very good
Wayfriend has his work
Cut out for him, and there is
Over a week left…
Who knows what may be
Submitted before deadline?
Such competition!

Hey, how can we compete with a dread Poet?
(I'm glad it wasn't a Haiku that we needed to do...)
They're all quite different in style so far, so should be interesting for Wayfriend to try and decide.

I obviously took the lewd-and-crude approach.

I enjoyed it very much MM! And as I was reading it, slightly lamented that I took the bad bad Shakespearian approach.

Despite the high regard I have for the clearly-superior entries by Owlie, Stevie, Matrixman, and DP Jethro, here's my submission:
- Linden, why should I write you a sonnet?
The last one I wrote was done for my wife
I’d like to win this contest, doggone it
But not if it will cause marital strife
Doctor Linden Avery, the Sunsage
That is a pretty title, to be sure
Still, your name provokes from some a great rage
They denounce you as if you were manure
My own view tends to be OPALescent
I do not know if you will save or damn
L.A.? THOOLAH? Each has fifty percent
No telling who’ll pass the final exam
Though it's unclear if you were Chosen well,
When Last Dark falls, the test of Truth will tell
Woo hoo, post #600!

Here's hoping no marriages will be endangered by arguments over Linden!
