Led listens to Skyseeker's words, gaze intent on only her. Lorekeeper training bade him remain silent and attentive while another speaks, so that the full weight of the words can have their effect. It was almost meditative, though his awareness was fully engaged.

Then there was confusion, and shouts. Someone had attacked her mid-speech? Here, of all places? All the rage he'd that had been calmed by the peaceful gathering and thoughtful words suddenly welled up within him. He immediately launched himself after the attacker, able to keep an eye on his location because shifters are taller than all of the many elves in the crowd.

Led races through the crowd, quickly realizing that moving through hundreds of people is actually no different than moving through hundreds of closely packed trees. Once you get the nack of it, you don't even need to slow down. Luckily, this elf hadn't figured that out, and was having to push and shove his way through the crowd. Ah, and there he encountered Kali, hiding in wait. She's scored a hit, as well. With that, he runs up behind the fleeing elf and pounces, claws extending and hands swinging down as he makes his final jump.

At first the claws catch the man on the shoulder blades and begin to cut in. As Led's additional speed brings him closer, the claws dig deeper into the man's body, sliding between some of the ribs and pulling them apart. Soon, the man is falling foward and Led is falling atop of him, claws continuing to cut as they go. Led is forced to relax his elbows to avoid breaking his arms on the ground.

He pushes off from the assassin's back and stands, belatedly realizing that he was touching the ground through the torso, and sees that he's actually ripped the bottom couple ribs from the corpse's torso as well as taken quite a bit of his intestines with them.

He looks around and realizes he's covered in this man's blood, and looks a little sheepish.

As he glances around at the surprised faces of the elves in the crowd, some wiping blood from their clothing, Laurel's words start to sink in.
Laurel wrote:"This bag contains the deadly fungus!"
Led's eyes widen in panic, his jaw drops. He makes a noise, not even a scream, just a grunt of primal fear. He looks down at his hands, covered in blood, unsure if there was aught else he might have touched in his haste. He starts to look around quickly, trying to remember where his horse is, and backing away from the body at the same time.

He spots the tall tree he thinks... hopes... is near where they tied their mounts. And he races that direction. This time, moving through the crowd is instinctive, which is good because the fear has already sunk in.

At Laurels declaration, Sksyeeker looks over at Marrik's arm, and screams, high and shrill.....

Marrik looks down in horror...the gash along his arm is sprouting hideous purple and deep red growths..he calls upon Missaryi for healing, and focuses his will upon the contagion poised to consume his flesh....as the Light shines from him, the seething mass begins to shrivel...drying up, and crumbling away in mere seconds...Skyseeker has barely even had time to retreat in horror more than a dozen feet, backpedaling.

The twisted carcass of the assassin...begins to change. The oft-mentioned "lesions" of the servants of the ancient evil become visible...bizarre fungi are visible within the corpse, slime, mold, fruiting bodies. A Dark Elf....somehow, the "immutable, ineradicable" mark of the taint upon their soul can now be concealed.

Calling on all her bardic vocal training, Laurel bellows after the hastening Led, "Led! The Darkness Beyond Death is contained for now!! That is something different, but you have absolutely nothing to be concerned about as far as The Darkness Beyond Death goes right now!!

"Come back!!! she frantically calls after him. "I...We need you with us!"

Since Laurel can heal, and she's with Skyseeker and Marrik, I follow Led to see what's wrong. "Led, are you well?"

Vynarkus sighs as he watches Led flee, as he was hoping that Led would have overcome his fear by now.

Rather than attempt to help, he begins to search for others, using Detect Magic to look for anyone magically disguised or carrying something with an aura similar to the fungus.

Led arrives at his horse quickly. He tries to untie the waterskin from the saddle, but his fingers are fumbling too much; adrenalin is making them jitter. So, realizing that he still has claws, he simply cuts the straps on the skin and pulls it away from the saddle.

He uses the holy water within to wash all the blood off his hands, then he pours quite a lot of the water over his head and chest. Realizing that there might be spores in the cloth of his clothes, he begins to strip down right there in the snow, shivering both from fear and increasing cold.

Once naked, he repeats his ablutions, making sure to cover all of his exposed skin. With the remaining holy water, he starts to rinse his clothing again, to get all the remaining spores off. There's not nearly enough holy water to do the job, though.

Led looks up at Sigrid, the bite of cold taking the edge of his panic. "Must wash the s-s-spores off before they t-t-take hold. N-n-need holy w-w-water."

With his last few splashes of holy water, he rinses off a ring and puts it back on, and then immediately stops shivering. A brief smile crosses his face, then.

"You don't understand. You haven't seen those spores. They'll GROW if you use healing magic on them. They'll kill you, and only immediate dousing in holy water and then healing magic can save you." He shakes the water pouch again, hoping for just a little more. Looking back at Sigrid, "Um... can you make holy water? I seem to have used it all, and my clothing still needs to be cleansed."

"Yes, I can. Hold up the skin."

I cast Create Water in the skin.
I cast Bless Water on the skin.

Led stares at the tiny Volk woman with reverence. "That ability alone will make you the most valuable person in our group."

The naked man then crouches over his clothes and slowly douses every inch of them with holy water, doing his best to conserve the holy water.

As he finishes, he dons each piece, ignoring the chill water through it.

"Um. Where's your little friend? I'd like to stand next to him for an hour or two, now. This will get ugly if my clothes freeze solid and I can't move."

I use Empathic Link to summon my familiar to me. We're by the horses, I take down my brassier from the saddle bags.

"Can we go back to the others? I need to hear the rest."

I walk back to the stage, and set up the brassier there. My familiar sits on the brassier.

Watching from a distance, Laurel sees Led use up all the holy water they had with them and bemusedly shakes her head; then makes her way over to mildly berate him. "You must let go of your panic over these spores, Led. The fungus affecting the elf you took down is different from The Darkness Beyond Death. It is the immutable, ineradicable taint that usually marks all Dark Elves, but which seems to now be able to be hidden. You honestly had nothing to worry about, and have used up precious resources.

"Yes, Sigrid was able to replenish it. But would that not have been better called on when it was truly needed?"

Led watches the girl and fire elemental return to the stage. Turning to Laurel, he says "He could have had more on him. What if I'd punctured another pouch of the stuff with my claws? I didn't mean to, but my hands were sticking out the far side of him... I could have easily ruined a seal with that. I couldn't take the chance."

Looking down, he notices that the front of his robe is already starting to stiffen with the cold. "Um, let's continue this over by the fire? While I can still walk."

He leads Laurel back to the stage, and stands next to the elemental in the brassier, while steam slowly wafts away from his drying clothes.

While Led's robes dry, Laurel makes her way back to the paladin. "Marrik, those growths upon your arm which the Light of Missaryi just healed... Where you able to tell what they were? As Led reminded me when speaking to Sigrid, The Darkness Beyond Death grows when exposed to positive energy, such as healing. Were these more the lesions of the Dark Elves somehow attacking you? Or was this blade," which she gestures towards without touching, "coated with the spores of The Darkness Beyond Death? And if so, how was your healing Light able to ward them off? Have we found an alternative in dealing with them, besides Holy Water?"

Kali watches the events unfolding with some amusement. Able to tear a man apart with his bare hands, yet scared of a blooming mushroom, she thinks to herself.

She circles the elf's body a few times, eying it closely. Satisfied it is very dead, she picks up the dagger he dropped and takes it over to the puddle of slush Led created by doing his laundry in the snow. Being very careful not to step in it with her bare feet, she rinses the dagger in the holy water slush which results in a vile smoke rising from the blade. Once clean, Kalindriel returns to the body.

Pulling a severed belt from the corpse, she unbuckles the broken end, examines it, and frowns. Attached to it is a fancy sheath with intricate silver work, onyx, and moonstone. She sheaths the dagger and having no belt of her own, tries to turn it into a makeshift leg holster, which comes apart shortly after strapping it to her leg. With another frown she picks the lot up and walks over to the group assembled at the stone.

"Anyone good with leather? I seem to have trouble keeping mine on."

Turning to Led, "You're safe. Only the blade was coated with the fungus. The elf was simply corrupted and not any danger now, unless you wanted to make a meal of him. Maybe safe even then if you don't mind a bad complexion." She looks over her shoulder at the body. "Still, what you said at the wagons is correct. They are dealing with a truly vile substance -- a primordial evil which predates, or is perhaps responsible for, much of the lower planes as they currently exist."

She squats in front of the elemental and warms her hands as she finishes talking. In Ignan she tells it, "Thanks. I do not believe we have met. I am Kali."

Led turns to Kalindriel and listens. Then panic creeps over his face, "There was something on the elf's body?" Color draining from his face, he nonethless creeps over to look at the shredded remains of the would-be assassin. Seeing the blooming fungus across the elf's body, he grows a little unsteady on his feet. His vision begins to dim at the edges, and he shoots out a hand to Kali's shoulder... he hopes it's her shoulder... for balance. Turning away, and fixing his eyes on the flickering flames of the elemental, he regains his composure.

"They can hide it?" he mutters. "They can hide it, and I touched one of them? Serloth protect me." He stumbles over to the stage and leans against it, not caring at the hundreds of elves watching his breakdown.

Kalindriel smiles at the elemental. "Oh yes, I am fluent in over half a dozen forms of communication. And I'm pretty good at faking all the rest." She gives a knowing wink. "Your surprise leads me to believe they don't talk with you much?"

Switching back to the common tongue, "Led, if you're worried about touching things that might not be what they seem, you should stop leaning on everything in sight." She stands up and raises her hands over her head in a corny imitation of a scary monstery, "I am really a terrible dark elf. AaaaAAaaahhh!" Her head suddenly stops, then she jerks it from side to side looking at her arms. "OH NO! I really am a half dark elf! Aiiieeee!" at which she flails her arms before laughing.
