Jaz, you might want to think about taking on a shitty job just for a job sake, much like I did with Office Depot. Then when they find out how fabulous you are you may be able to work up through the ranks quite quickly. Good corporate retail managers recognize and reward excellence quite quickly and their management people do get paid well once they make it up there to assistant manager, the job I'm in line for next.

Cov, that is total BS. Once again I am forced to tell you to come to the states. Give up your unholy dependency of that island and do something crazy.

I had a fun day at work today. I came in and overheard Kfir telling a customer that his chair assembly would not be ready until Sunday. I was annoyed so I helped Tony out with some stuff in copy and print and told him that I was going to be busy assembling chairs, (the customer ordered 6) for a bit. Kfir was highly skeptical of my ability to assemble chairs but I told him he was not providing good customer service by giving such a long turn around and that I did quite a bit of chair assembly at my old store and didn't mind doing it one bit. Kfir is a bit lazy. Anyway, I went back to the back to talk to Nate since he's the main furniture guy. He showed me the pallets of furniture he had waiting to be put away and the list of new labels since they just revamped the furniture area this week. I told him, don't worry, I will help with all of it. He was shocked that I volunteered to help. I started assembling the first chair and Nate finished writing the list of tags he needed to print and so I let him finish the chair where I left off and proceeded to type in all the item numbers and printed the labels, about a hundred of them. By the time I was done, Nate had the first chair done and was pretty much done with the second. I started another and we sat side by side and assembled chairs and talked. One of the chairs had a rip in the leather pad of the arm which we didn't notice until Nate had the chair almost all the way assembled. That meant that in the end we actually ended up assembling seven chairs and we marked the ripped one down for quick sale. Then he called the customer and let him know the chairs were ready and the customer was quite happy about it. Then Seth asked me if I would set up the new display for the floor guards and so forth. I said sure and got to hang out with Nate in furniture for a lot longer. I had a ton of stuff left over for top stock from the new product and realized that they must have double shipped the merchandise for the new rack because all my top stock was the same numbers and either labelled the 27th of Jan or the 8th of Feb. I got it all top stocked and Nate made it easy for me by handing me stuff off the freight cart so I didn't have to keep running up and down the ladder. When we got finished we had a nice high five bonding moment and he said it was really nice having someone help him out and to help someone else work in his department today. I told him, "Teamwork, that's what I am TALKING about."

During all this we helped a bunch of customers with furniture questions and so forth. At one point I asked if anyone could check a number for me to see if we had some in stock. No response. I asked again. No response so I walked up to the tech bench to check it myself and two other managers were just standing there talking about a foot away from where they could have easily punched in a six digit number and saved me the trip half way across the store. I said, "What, you guys can't hear me or just choose to ignore me?" One looked a bit taken aback but the other jokingly said he was choosing to ignore me. I said, "Fine, I'll remember this moment with something way less than fondness." They got the picture that I was not happy. I proceeded to make a show of walking back and forth stock checking for the customer without asking and then made sure to rattle loudly by when bringing up the big huge heavy file cabinet that the customer finally purchased. One of them asked if I needed help and I said, "Nope, I got it just fine thanks. I didn't think I would get help if I bothered to ask and Nate is busy with two customers already so I didn't want to ask him even though I know he would have jumped to help, but don't worry, I got it." One got the message. The other, not so much. Went right over his head. Anyway, it's all good.

I just loved getting a chance to work side by side and getting to know another one of my associates that I haven't had a ton of working time with. That was quite fun. Tomorrow, I have one chore to get out of the way and then I am going to help him put that furniture away. I haven't had much of a physical workout at work since I left Emeryville and I think I need one.

Today I feel clean, clean, clean.

I've just realized that today is the first time in about five years that I've had a bath.

No, no, no, I've not been like totally stinky. I'ts just that all the places I've stayed in over the last five years have had only showers.

My short stay at the Coventry Emmaus commune had an old fashioned bath - a stand alone thing with brass taps - but I never got around to using it, taking only showers.

My uncle died yesterday. We've got an 8 hour drive next week with a kid just under 2 years old who is particularly whiny right now. I have a feeling the drive will be from hell. Thankfully he did get a portable DVD player from his grandpa, so it will be Shawn The Sheep, Muppet Show and Sesame Street for the majority of the drive, which I don't mind, but I suspect Carla might.

It's been working right for hours now, but yeah. Only page that would load reliably was the index.

I had the same problem.

My condolences, Cag. Good luck with the car ride.

Today I feel mildly embarrassed, and a bit sore. I was walking to church, and I fell flat on my face in the middle of the crosswalk. I scraped both knees (miraculously, no holes in the pants), tore holes in both my gloves, scraped my thumb, and somehow my shoe ended up 3 feet away from me. Luckily, there were no cars at the time, so I didn't get run over. A very kind Korean woman asked me some stuff in Korean (which I'm assuming meant: did you get hurt?, since I heard the word for "to hurt"). I saw her again at the entrance to the church. I spent the entire Mass wondering whether I was bleeding, and when I got back to my apartment I discovered that my knees were rather scraped-up and bloody, but nothing too serious.
The crosswalk was flat, entirely free of ice, and not particularly dirty, and my shoes were properly tied. I have no idea why I fell. I am such a klutz.

Don't worry, Auleliel, I fall over nothing all the time. In fact, I fell over my shoe twice walking home from work tonight. It was a long day...

Cag, sorry about your uncle, and about the impending car ride of doom.

Owlie, at least you're okay. I tend to trip a lot, too...

Kind of a lazy Sunday here. Finished the knitting on a baby sweater this morning for my boss who's pregnant -- I found out Friday that she's having a boy, so I finally knew who to use the blue yarn for. I still have to assemble the sweater, but that won't take long, and it'll be months before the kid shows up. Now I'm doing laundry. I ought to be organizing paperwork and doing my taxes, but here I am on the Watch instead....

Had a nice brunch with Julie, Heatherly, Terry and little Ethan today. Ethan flirted shamelessly with me across the table and I of course instigated all of it. The hand touching and hiding faces and giggling and the silly faces and the pretending not to grin grins and hand feeding him my home fries. He is about the sweetest kid in his terrible twos I have ever encountered. He was all big blue eyes and grins and happy. Gorgeous. I even got the extended cheek asking for kisses. OH and don't forget the peekaboo before he got raised up into the high chair from the stroller. Someone had to pop up over the edge of the table so might as well have been me. Then Bloodguard Bob's friend had a barbecue in Golden Gate Park so I went to that and Moose ran around like a maniac and made everyone gush about how cute he was and give him food for being so damn cute. All in all a good day.

A professor I'm in contact with regarding the ongoing PhD matter has been confounding me with his email signature. With any teaching staff in academia, I address them formally at first (in this case, Professor _______) until I can see their email signature. If they sign with their first name only, then I start using their first name. But this one particular professor has hitherto used an automated signature that always gives his full name and title. Awkward. Today I got an email from him without said auto signature and began to hope I might finally know... but he signed it with his initials, GAL. What do I call him?!

Cag, I can relate. I hope it all goes as well as it can.

It's nice to hear news from all you real people on the internet. It's a pleasure to read it all! As for me, we had a public holiday today, and went to the Regatta. and then mini golf which the kids enjoyed.

Performed at an amateur comedy night last night, for the third time. Crowd was tough, everyone struggled, despite the MC's valiant efforts to maintain the energy. Despite that, I managed to do quite well, I thought. Managed to get a few hearty chuckles, which was about as enthusiastic as the crowd got all night. So I'm feeling pretty pleased.

Just had an agonising experience. I'd been on my feet most of the day, due to walking to work, standing behind checkout at work, then walking back home. Then I sat and watched TV for about an hour, stood up, and my left leg packed a shit. Locked up and completely immobilized itself. I fell flat on my face mid stride and began to writhe about, not doing much but gasping. The pain was incredible, I've had bad cramps before, when I was a competitive swimmer, but this was just a constant agony with no let up. Finally managed to break the lock by dragging myself halfway onto the couch and forcing my leg to bend under me until I could sit on my haunches. Now I'm exhausted.

Good news is I can afford the bus tomorrow...

Wow, Cambo, that sounds painful. Hope it doesn't recur.

Last night, I couldn't stay awake for some reason. Lights out at 9:30pm. Woke up at 5:30am, couldn't sleep any more. Alarm doesn't go off 'til 7. 8O I've been puttering around ever since. And I just realized that I'm liable to be late for work anyhow.
