It's the most beautiful country I've ever visited, the people there are astonishingly friendly, and, for Northern persons who cannot withstand heat at all (gaaads Hungary at this time of the year; bit of an ordeal on my last summer vacation...), very nice climate-wise.
Twenty plus years ago a fellow train commuter I knew told me of living for a time in Iceland; when her husband was serving in the navy and was stationed there. She couldn't stand the place. To each their own, I guess.
Well, could be a matter of the visitor's background plus the fact that 20 years is a long time regarding todays's fast-paced cultural and technological changes. Iceland is very Nordic in all the meanings of the word, and someone not comfortable over there might not feel so in Finland either.

Navy wives.

I kid, I kid. My wife, southern girl that she is, would've killed me if I'd taken orders to Reyjkavik (it was a possibility at one point), but I'm sure she'd jump at the chance to visit. In the summer.

Or if near a Thai restaurant, fill up on Tom Yum <whatever>. The lemongrass and chili oil in hot broth helps a lot.

But, I have no idea of the availability of lemongrass in your part of Africa, deer.

May be more available than lemongrass, but nearly as effective.

I feel exhausted and I have to be up to get ready to go to work in less than six hours. My schedule for work has been jumping all over the place and even though I was assured that I would be rotating weekends I've ended up working two weekends on and one off so I've worked four out of five weekends and this coming weekend will be my second weekend off. Also the gal who does the scheduling seems to like to give me the shaft when it comes to staffing on my closing nights and she also seems to take a sick pleasure in making me close one night and open the next morning. This is why I can't get any sleep tonight. I left work tonight after a very stressful shift with only having myself, one copy and print person and a barely competent cashier for the last two hours of work. I don't even have a proper amount of time to de-stress and decompress and I have to get up and be back at work by 7 am tomorrow. I had to be the manager on duty, perform the cash office stuff, recover the store by myself and get all lock up and continuously babysit the cashier whom they hired because she was so nice but also has such severe memory handicaps (which is probably why she lost her last job and something she made NO mention of when interviewing) that I am still telling her how to do basic stuff that I have told her four days a week, several times a shift for five weeks. To top it off, she's on some meds (elderly lady) that make her have to go to the bathroom about 7-8 times in a four hour shift and she blows the bathroom up so bad that when I had to pee tonight, even with my shirt over my mouth and nose I was gagging so much from he stench that I literally ran out of the bathroom and out the backdoor and heaved up the rest of my dinner. Granted that's not the way it is every night but two days a week start to get old fast...
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Great advice. Continents away from Thai food, I'm afraid, but lemongrass grows in the yard. :) And chicken soup with lots of garlic and parsley does it for me. Lemons and limes are getting hard to find this time of year...

Jenn, time to throw some performance objectives on the lady. If she has a handicap and she "forgot" to mention it, and it interferes with her performing her duties, then I'm pretty sure you can let her go without repercussions, but you have to start documenting her failure to perform.

Read the reviews for this recipe; apparently it can be adjusted to taste and ingredients on hand. It may also give you ideas on things to add to your chicken soup with garlic and parsley.

Tom Yum Gai

Feel well soon, deer!

Jenn, I hope your schedule gets worked out. Sleep deprivation, especially on a continuous basis, is not fun.

Excited 'cause I just scored my first vote in the current contest of Win Wayfriend's Money. I truly didn't expect that, based on the other entries. Thanks!

No one good comes to Africa. :( (Musicians, I mean.)

And the problem with Thai food is that darn fish sauce. Haven't found that yet here... there are some Chinese here, maybe there is something similar they have.

Feeling lots better after a monumental headache yesterday. Thanks!! :)

While far from being the same, you can probably substitute soy sauce for nuc mahn. Or a smashed anchovy or squirt of anchovy paste. The fish flavoring will be lost, but nuc mahn is salty in a similar way to soy sauce, isn't it?
