You wouldn't be Mr Drawing A Blank, from Duh-Moine, I-oh-what? :)
Welcome to the Watch.

Hail, Earthfriends! Um, I mean, hello everybody

Hello all. Just signed up to the Watch after a couple of weeks of lurking and reading. I was delighted to find the place - had no idea it existed at all.

I've really enjoyed reading everything I can find here about SRD and Thomas Covenant - I especially like that there is a humorous side to a lot of the discussion, and that the "canon" is not always dourly defended by fearsome gatekeepers, as happens at, for instance, a lot of LOTR sites. Had a particularly epic laugh at the THOOLAH blog, even though I like and sympathise with Linden.

At the present time I have only read the First and Second Chronicles, plus Gilden Fire, but recently got myself re-instated at my local library after an unfortunate misunderstand that got me barred (barred from the library! The shame!) so I hope to read the Third Chrons and Fatal Revenant soon.

I first read Lord Foul's Bane when I was about ten, and was blown away by how grown-up and gritty it seemed in comparison to the clean and "weightless" fantasy that was so prevalent back then - the kind of books where the hero I was supposed to admire seemed like the product of a eugenics programme, who's worst actions seemed to have no real consequences, and where even the good guys had no conscience at all, plus paper-thin motivation at best.

Thomas Covenant was different. An outcast messiah consumed by guilt and self-hatred was more my kind of guy!

Anyway, don't want to bore everybody with a long introduction. There'll be plenty of time to talk about that stuff later I hope.

It's nice to meet everybody. Also, can someone direct me to the comedy or spoof section, as I have written an affectionate poke at the first chapter of LFB, called "The First Utility Bill of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever." Thanks in advance.

Be Welcome to the Watch, BTW.
Be Well Come and True.

Jump in anywhere, we have all sorts of topics going on.
Be cautious of stumbling upon Third Chron spoilers though.
The admins and mods all try to catch and hide them behind spoiler tags, so one would purposely have to highlight it to read it, but if you use the "read posts since last visit" or the search function, the spoilers tags don't work.

Other than that, have fun!!

Thanks Menolly. I'm okay with spoilers usually, they don't bother me too much - I've already found out some stuff about the Third Chrons, but it just made me want to read them all the more.

Welcome, BellTelephoneCompany. You picked an interesting ... er ... "character" in the Chronicles to use as your membername. I hope this doesn't mean you're going to send us a bill. :D

Hello wayfriend. I love the fact that Thomas Covenant, despite being the lead character in a truly epic fantasy, spends the very first chapter after we meet him in a futile attempt to pay his phone bill! To my knowledge, he's also the only fantasy character that has a named lawyer who does lawyerly things on his behalf. Sometimes I go through the Chronicles just reading the real-world bits.

I also like to think that after his bill gets paid for him at the Electric Company "scorching arcs of corruscating argent power" make their way back to Haven Farm along the grid.

Welcome, BellTelephoneCompany! (boy, that's a handful!) We all look forward to engaging you in discussion!

As far as where you can post your spoof, I'd start by looking over here. This is the forum known as The Hall of Gifts where Watchers can post some of their creative writings, be it poetry, short stories, and, presumably, parodies. So, go ahead and have a look over there, see if it's what you're looking for!

Hi, venommous checking in for the first time.

I've been a Donaldson fan since my first edition way back in the 70's. Even gone so far as having a white gold wedding ring and naming my house "Kiril Threndor" - which if you know its alternative name also suits my rock music volume!! Crass or sycophantic, but still cool?
Cheers,
V

Thank you for your kind words - I kinda lead a "White Gold" existence and have for over 30 years. Just can't stop reading and re-reading his works.
However, in my defence, I did start Shotokan karate before I knew SRD did it also. Honest!!

From one house namer to another, I bid you welcome Venommous... I named my house Andelaine (with an 'e')

And welcome also to BellTelephoneCompany (is it ok to abbreviate to BTC?)

Have fun and enjoy your stay.

By your avatar, may I suggest you check out the Watch's Comics and Cartoons forum, for when you may wish to discuss other things than SRD and his works?

We have lots of other topics as well.
Jump in anywhere, as I see you have already begun to do. :)

BTC is fine with me. I can't expect everybody to type out the full name every time. I've just realised I'll have to do it myself every time I sign in, with the capitals in the right places and all! 8O

If you only have the one Watch account, and do not share your computer, you can check the "Log me on automatically each visit" box on the login page to avoid that very thing.
