Just wanna say Hi, I am not a big forum poster so this may be my only post.

Also, I would like to briefly share the affect that the Covenent series had on my life due to someones perception and kindness.

At school in the early '80s imagine me as a friendless introverted smelly kid with a bad home life. I had quite a rich internal life though.
In my lessons, particularly the techy ones I did very well, but in english I did poorly in spite of my teachers constant appreciation of the stories I would write, even when I was supposed to be writing something else.
My teachers wanted me to do better, but I was very stubborn (a general defense) so in the end they would just sigh and give me low marks.
One Teacher, in a fit of frustration, one day reccommended - in fact kindly insisted - that I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Something in her eye when she said it made me hunt down the books and read them.
In those books I learned how to use my talent for internal storytelling to constructively deal with pain and betrayal. I learned to adapt in practical, sincere and intelligent ways and to go beyond the bitterness that may have otherwise been the only legacy of my early life. More - to use my expeiences as the plain reality of our lives should be used - with compassion and acceptance and deterimination to grow spiritually and morally and to share that strength to help others grow.
In a large part, due to this, myself and many other people that I have helped have benefitted.


Also, having recently read the latest books in the final Chronicles, I am not dissappointed. Stephen, Mr Donaldon, you have exceeded my expectations...

So, just thought it would be a shame not to mention it.

Welcome to the watch, madeofparts. (Aren't we all?) That's a great story by way of introduction, and many of us will empathize with your experience. We have lots of writers around here, and a Writers Circle, if you want to discuss writing in general. And of course you can share your specific comments on how well SRD does what he does all over this place. And who knows, perhaps your teacher is lurking around here somewhere.

One day I hope my own son can make that transformative an adjustment. He does alright in school, but relating to others is a challenge for him, due to being on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. He loves to read though, and I hope one day a series will affect him the way TCTC has affected many of us here.

Sounds an awful lot like what I went through in school. Which made the music and movies of the early '80s that much more important to me as a means of escape. Books, too, of course, and none were more important than the Chronicles.

At least you had a positive experience with your teacher regarding TCTC - she actually recommended it to you! The only experience I had with a teacher that directly involved TCTC was when said teacher took away my copy of The One Tree. It may have been because he hated seeing anyone reading about Linden Avery. (Kidding.)

I inherited my books from my brother who passed in late 1995. I was depressed from his passing and read the First two Trilogies from that state of mind, so I totally relate to MadeOfParts' experience and think it was extremely well related in the post

Great insight, I hope MadeOfParts contributes more, with that opening post... I have hopes for future insightful angles in posts from MadeOfParts, that haven't been fleshed out yet

Welcome to the Watch. It would be such a shame to make that your only post after such a good entrance. At least go discuss the Chrons in the TC forums to start with.
