A question. Will I be able to buy PG Tips (tea bags) in ABQ? If not I'll bring a supply with me. Can't survive without my cuppa. No way I can drink coffee without sugar in. Also, can I buy Golden Virginia hand rolling tobacco? I'll bring papers and filters with me.

That's probably because you look nowhere near your age! Thanks, I really am quite a lot thinner than I was when you last saw me, but I probably looked worse under 2 jumpers, a shirt and a coat!

I rented a convertible the last time I was in NM. A mustang. Driving that thing through the desert was different. I think I had Thelma and Louise of the brain. Reality was a bit different. Wind blown, burned, tangled, and hot. And an astounding 12 mpg. Give me a hard top with AC any day.

Io, I cannot comment on rolling tobacco, especially specific brands, but there surely will be something equivalent available, as well as some interesting options.

Tea, much the same.

Io..Experience from " Lost " fans visiting from the Empire at various occasions..suggests..highly suggests..if you have a certain taste and quality of Tea in mind,,bring it with you. Our " tea" is to your tea as our beer is to German domestic beer.

And while we do have various loose tobacco for rolling purposes I would bring with if you are particular as to taste etc...I may be wrong about Albq,,but a good cigar shoppe or a good " tobacco" shoppe will have the filters and papers and some assortment of loose tobacco. " Tobacco "shoppes in Phoenix ..will sell you the tobacco , papers, filters,,and let you roll them using their rolling machine there at their shop. .avoiding hefty taxes. Tobacco product bought on an Indian Reservation has no federal tax but the American Indian is no fool. His prices are less than retail, but he is still in the game to make money. I've seen " Top", Bugle Boy" and one or two other loose tobacco tins for sale at Indian Reservation stores at about 70% of what white man charges. But that was a few years ago while I still smoked.

My suggestion is to bring with. ..and if the Customs Man decides to confiscate,,heck , Colorado is only 3 to 4 hours away.

Lorin, you speak words of wisdom...if you are coming to the Southwest during any of the summer months..be sure to rent a vehicle that has Air Conditioning. Preferably a hard top ,,with big enough motor to haul up and down hills with the A/C on at full blast.. I would suggest a SUV sort of thing with a V6.. 3 to 4 liter engine,,with A/C. ..think Toyota....I know its only for a few days and once here you won't be driving that much..but A/C shouldn't cost you extra. Make sure they understand that A/C is part of the deal. You will be much happier for it.

The " heat" here in the SouthWest, during summer is like Donaldson's " Save or Damn" concept,,I mean..it can pass rite thru you..or it can be like a burr under the saddle, a constant irritant..and thats being kind..Maybe the summer heat is like Donaldson's evolved to...Save AND Damn..there is no escape so welcome it with open arms...and a good air conditioner. A swim pool is a good idea too..but your skin gets all wrinkly after staying in the pool all day..so..

Someone gave me some US coins last night, and an adapter plug. I was very confused as one of the coins is larger than another yet is worth a smaller amount. I am going to think of them as 5 pences (5 cents - is that a dime?) crowns (25 cents) and 10 pences (10 cents). Then I have some 1 cents which are the same size as our 1 pences. This is all I will have when I arrive until I can get to a cash machine.

from my understanding 100 pence = 1 pound and 100 cents = 1 dollar. 1 pound = 1.678 dollars today so if I haven't totally screwed up the math, 1 pence = 1.678 cents. Therefore 5 pence = 8.39 cents.

so I'm guessing (my math sucks)

a nickel (5 cents)=8.39 pence
a dime (10 cents)=16.78pence
a quarter (25 cents)= 41.95pence

Originally, a cent had 1 cent's worth of copper, a nickel 5 cents' worth of nickel, and a dime 10 cents' worth of silver. Because the same weight of each metal was worth a different amount, the coins' sizes had to be different in order to match weights and values. For example, silver was (and still is) worth a lot more per ounce than copper, so a dime could have a lot less metal in it but be worth far more than a copper cent.


Even though the monetary value of coins no longer represents the value of their metal content, the traditional sizes are maintained.

5 cents is a nickel. It's larger than a dime which is worth 10 cents.

Also, bank notes are all the same size in U.S. currency. A dollar bill is the same size as a one hundred dollar one.

Yes, your maths sucks... wrong way round.

If a pound = 1.678 dollars, then a dollar = 0.596 pounds and a cent equally = 0.596 pence. (You were right up until your "I'm guessing" part.)

Ergo...

a nickel (5 cents) = 2.98 pence
a dime (10 cents) = 5.96 pence
a quarter (25 cents)= 14.9 pence

Iolanthe, call 5 cents thruppence and a buck sixty pee and you'll be as near as dammit correct.

...and to be fair to our transatlantic cousins, our 20p piece is smaller than our 10p piece.

'Fraid not, Io. I'm flying Aer Lingus out of Dublin to Toronto on Tuesday. I won't be getting into Albuquerque until Wednesday afternoon (I have a layover in Toronto). (I'm going via Toronto as I'm visiting a friend on the way back.)

We'll just have to wait and meet up at lorin's b'day party at Cochina Azul on Wed evening
