did Hamilton's Void trilogy.
Fun, with interesting quirks/thoughts on political/philosophical/cultural stuff...
though did we REALLY need ANOTHER speculative fiction universe where elves are real-ish??

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, by way of Fist and Faith.
Enjoying it quite a lot already, and only 60 odd pages in.

Read the graphic novel adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H. P. Lovecraft. Interesting story.

Such a good book! duchess told me about it. Good thing, because I've never heard of it otherwise.

Great book!
Just finished a reread of
The Gold Coast by Kim Stanley Robinson. I read it a good few years ago and was happy to find it again recently in a secondhand book shop. Interesting near-future story set in Orange County, California. Well-written and a nice mix of interesting characters and ideas.

That particular book has been passed around to a few Watchers, unless Fist has more than one copy.

It's really great. It's the first book I've read in months that actually kept me from the game I'm playing. Which means I'm nearly done with it of course.
Once I've read the other one, I'll go read the dedicated thread.

Two copies. I found one in the used store, which I sent to you, which I think lorin has now. I sent Av the copy I had in the first place. I'll pick it up again when it shows up in the used store again.

Started
Runes of the Earth... arrrrghhh, pain!!!
I'm putting it aside and reading "
Ashes of our Joy" (The Epic of Karolan, book 2) right now...
..it's a borrowed copy & I only have it for a few weeks!
I finished the first one in the series a couple years ago.
I noticed "The Sparrow" making the rounds awhile back, too...
What is it and do I want to read it sometime?

Got a title for you... one I thought was a rare find... I am due for a re-read on it:

It's got characters from the "Arabian Nights" setting.
But now that I think about it... not quite SF/Fantasy.
(drastically different culture/setting though.)

In The Sparrow, an inhabited planet is discovered in the relative vicinity to our solar system. While the governments are arguing about who to send, the Jesuits just do it. The main character is a Jesuit, and is among my handful of favorite characters from literature. Very moving in various ways. There's a sequel, Children of God.

Man, and here I was, thinking a book I'd once had my hands on was visiting South Africa. Thanks for bursting my bubble.
I didn't like
Children of God as well as I liked
The Sparrow. It was still good, tho.
Linna, I think you'd like these two books.

u.
That sparrow thing looks interesting.
u...you know that that Robinson is part of a threesome [the middle part]?
been a long time since I read, so could be wrong...but memory tells me they aren't quite connected enough to be called a "trilogy."
Heh...reaching back a few posts, I went looking for Neverness, and people are paying crazy prices for copies!

Like the concept! Thanks for your recs, Fist and ali!
And Jesuits!
I just discovered that I apparently get what little I know about the Jesuits confused with another order, and that is kinda not cool!

I didn't know that. I enjoyed the one I've read, so I'll check that out, thanks!
I think you'll dig
The Sparrow alright, Linna. It touches on a number of your interests, I'd say

Like Ali, I think I enjoyed Sparrow more, but Children of God was still pretty damn good.
Rereading A Game Of Thrones quickly, because somebody lent me book 2.

The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett. Not sure why this is striking me as YA fantasy, but it is.

It just didn't do anything for me. No motivation to go on.
