Trying to get a second job, and after a frustrating week of filling out online applications on a computer that goes offline every 3 minutes or so, I went back today to check on some of my more promising leads. Yes, I went crawling back to the company that laid me off 3 years ago - or at least, I tried to. I knew that they were near bankruptcy, and I expected that one of their downtown stores would be closing - so I applied at both, since both are convenient to my first job. Turns out that two days ago they announced that they are closing BOTH locations, which includes their Flagship store and leaves downtown SF without a single bookstore, which is depressing all by itself. Curse my timing. I should have tried harder before the holidays, but 'should have' isn't going to get me anywhere now.

Sorus, if you'd tried to get into that store before the holidays, you'd be on the verge of being laid off now. Count your blessings. 8)

The girls (by which I mean Magickmaker, Batty, and Shara_Lunison) arrived yesterday for Katsucon. We've had a nice visit so far, except that Magickmaker's cat hisses at Batty and Shara_Lunison every time she sees them. Sigh. Anyway, they're at the con right now, so I have the house to myself. I took yesterday off so I could be here when they arrived, and Monday's a holiday (for me, anyhow -- they all have work and/or school that day, muahahaha). So I get a four-day weekend out of the deal. 8)

That is true on the one hand, but on the other, I am not looking for anything long-term. Mainly trying to pay off all of my debt (dental bills) - which isn't all that severe. In my old job, I could have paid it off in about 6 months. In my current job, it's going to take 27 years. The real reason I am lucky is that I was actually given a choice between being laid off or being demoted. Given the turnover rate, I probably could have worked my way back up pretty quickly. And after my old location closed down, I probably would have ended up at the Flagship store, which means that in some alternate universe I found out two days ago that I would soon be out of work... So yeah, things could be worse. That's usually true. Every place I have ever worked before is gone. And that feels weird. As the saying goes, the world has moved on....

I got called a racist today. I refused to take back over 150 dollars in labels with no receipt from a black girl today and she went out to "find the receipt" and brought back her pushy friend who tried to intimidate me which didn't work. So I gave her the corporate number and she told them I was racist and wouldn't take the labels back because she was black and I was white and referred to Tony as the white racist manager. Oh well. She got nowhere with corporate because as I pointed out to her, the return policy clearly states, "Office depot retains the right to refuse service or deny returns for any reason." Tony was backing me up on this whole thing and he went so far as to check last sales from our store and we hadn't sold any of them for over two months, one had a last sale of april 2010, which put them well past the 30 day limit for any return at all, with or without a receipt. Anyway, the whole thing was actually pretty funny. Especially since Tony isn't even white, He's Italian/Latino. Anyway, I called the nearby stores and gave them a description of the girls and what product they had so that they would be alerted to refuse return as well. I want to know what a girl of maybe 17 is doing with the three most expensive packs of labels we sell in the first place....

Other than that the rest of my day was relatively smooth. Sorry about your sucky financials Sorus. I feel your pain.

Apparently I'm "annoying". Pfffft. I tire of people. I'm beginning to understand why old people surround themselves with cats.

I don't think you're annoying. But then, I myself have been called annoying several times.

Why in the world would you want to do that?

I was feeling a little down today. And I'm worried I might be getting a cold. I'll just have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Feel better soon, Sarge!

Orlion, I was going to ask why you were punching the ceiling, too, but I was afraid to find out the answer.... 8O

CovJr, I think you're on to something. Academic hermitdom is clearly in your future. And cats. Definitely cats. :P

The girls went back home yesterday, so the apartment is all mine again, muahahaha. It's kind of quiet now. Maybe too quiet. But at least now the cat has nothing to hiss at.

Well, I had knee surgery about two weeks ago. So my knee's a bit ache-y. And I'm bored silly from the inactivity. ;) But I'm doing my PT exercises and hanging in there.

What do you need to do to it?

Well, I just got the box, so I need an av cable, a power adaptor, a gard drive and controllers. Everything is available from various places apart from the power adaptor, which is proving tricky.

SO NERVOUS. Going to substitute teach a class for the first time... Even though it's English, which my degree is in, I feel like a babe in the mouth of a large bass.
