I bought Gears of War yesterday in preparation for recieving my Xbox 360 tonight. I hope it's as good as everyone says it is, I actually paid retail price for it which is something I usually only do for games I've pre-ordered (only GTA: Vice City and The Burning Crusade to date). CliffyB's foreword in the manual certainly struck a chord with me though. Is anyone else tired of endless hopping and circle-strafing in modern FPSs?

Been playing my DS more lately--A Link to the Past in particular. Always great to have my favorite game in portable form.

Ordered probably my last GBA game the other day: Yggdra Union, a card-based strategy RPG. It's similar to Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, except a lot more complex and quirky. Supposedly one must actually read the manual of the game to understand it!

Recently, a lot of Super Smash Bros Melee and Mario Kart : Double Dash. Both on the Gamecube.

Deus Ex. It's slightly better than I remember it being. Still pretty unforgiving though.

I'm playing Vega Strike - Open-source freeware that mimics the old Elite but with modern(ish) graphics etc. Actually pretty damn good I must say. Especially for free stuff.

I think I'm going to have to check that out, I'm sick of trying out games that are supposed to be the new Elite and always, always turn out to be pale imitations. I'm also going to try and get Independence War to run on my computer. It's still the best space simulator I've ever played but it's not easy to get it going on a modern machine (and downright hard to get it running with 3Dfx support, but it looks nice if you can manage it).

This one is pretty good.

vegastrike.sourceforge.net/

Downloads on the top left for the lastest release. 200mb. You'll definitely want to read the manual, but actually, even the controls are similar.

Certainly the closest I've yet found. :D

Of course, there's always Frontiers First Encounters. Elite III.

And the rebuilt for windows version:

Download the old version from here, then download the windows update from here. You first have to have the shareware version installed before you can install the update.

But in terms of graphics etc, Vega Strike is better.

(Long live open source. :D )

Good call. I remember getting that game one christmas when I was about 10. Ahhh...the memories. I think I completed it with everyone except the old Indian bloke, he was just too bloody slow for the last couple of bosses.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

Besides Vanguard, I am playing Stalker. It's simply incredible.

Yeah, that was the problem with Dhalsim. If he was up against someone nippy enough to hop past his long reach, he was rendered essentially helpless.

Final Fantasy XII. It's consuming my life. :?

I haven't really picked FFXII up again for a while. Going home tomorrow, and a lto of free time in the next few weeks, so I'll probably get back into it.
Same with most games. Been on and off a few of them recently: Half Life, RTR, M2TW, Rise of Legends, FFXII, Worms 2... I try a game, can't really get into it, then decide to dig out some other I haven't played in a while, then fail to get into that as well, and the cycle continues...

Silent Hunter IV arrived today - installing it now. :D Shame I can't play a German U-Boat. It's the Pacific war, so it's American subs versus Japanese vessels.

Gears of War and Viva Pinata mostly. Gears is as good as I had heard and feels like the most realistic and engaging combat simulation I've played to date. Viva Pinata is a lot of fun too, kind of like Theme Park meets The Sims with a bit of SimLife thrown in there too. I think this is probably the best Rare game for quite a long time.

I'm having another go at FFX. I remembered it being irritatingly linear...but I'd forgotten just how linear. This must be the weakest FF ever.

Also, Tidus is a whiny pretty-boy. Yuck.

Yuna reminds me of Rinoa, but with the personality stripped away.

The only decent character at this point is Wakka, and even he annoys me with his semi-Caribbean accent.
