Have fun, this is a great pace, but beware. It's a tough call whether I'm more addicted to cigarettes or KW, and I haven't been here that long.

Hi Cambo and thank you. I know what you mean, beware, anything Donaldson related and I can get lost for weeks. Just finished Against All Things Ending in 4 days, bit of a record for me. Looking forward to not being a KW noob

Av and I will continue to push the Gap series - here's as good a place as any.

Mordant - awesome read, I loved it. The Gap - another level in my very very humble opinion.

I didnt mention the Gap series because I havent actually read any of them. I know, this is an EXTREMELY poor effort on my part, and i only really have 2 excuses, though the second is quite a valid one..... I'm more of a fantasy man rather than sci-fi but mainly... I've never found the first book in shops. Found the second, third etc but not the first. And never really bought much online. I suppose i should start especially now i've found people who can actually advise me

Donaldson writes about characters - genre doesn't matter. The Gap seems to offend some readers, but I just can't see it. I think it's a comparison with the Chronicles - the land has beauty, and bold and brave and wonderful people. The Gap has less of that! But it's a feat of epic proportions, and should be read by all! <plug end>

You raise good points Stevie, not really thought of it that way. Though i do disagree very slightly about the 'genre doesn't matter'. I think that part, i guess, is more about personal preference. My problem is that apart from me the only 2 people i know who actually know who SRD is are my ex and her mum. So not the best people to discuss in depth with. All i've had to go on with the Gap series is what i've read online, which isnt much. I thin a trip to amazon might be in order

I'll chime in for a love of the Gap series. I almost never read sci-fi either, but I thought I'd give a try since it is Donaldson. I still think it is the best thing he has written. It doesn't have as big of emotional punch as Covenant, but damn it's a well crafted series. Definitely give it a read. The first book isn't the best he has written, but it works for what is to come.

The Gap beats the Chronicles in my opinion, at least once you reach book 3 (the first one is a prologue really, the second one gets interest, but 3-5 are just nonstop intensity). Definitely try it! And yeah, it's set in space, but like most of SRD's work it's very much character-orientated, so hey, maybe it'll even be a gateway into the wonderful world of spaceships and FTL

Yeah, I agree with Cag...it's his best. I love the Chrons and MN, but the Gap rocks. It is, (in the words of Cj IIRC) "brutal."

Definitely worth reading.

The first book is quite short but 2-5 are lengthy. Depending on how fast you read, you may be safe saving the last couple til next pay day.
