Ok, well Cail regardless of anything else I am interested in hearing your second read reactions. I too know how the first and second chrons can be a significant read....five years of my life dedicated to a parody of just LFB, not to mention all the money I have spent....
On the Gap series...well, I loved them but the first book was painful to get through....all the raping of Morn, both mental and physical, truly horrifying. I can say that especially from the standpoint of being female it's tough as hell to read many of the early passages of that series.
Seareach, Jay....you guys are way too funny....and for all of you on this thread....WHY OH WHY didn't ANY of you come on my DANG show?!!!???

I would say that Linden has been dangerously eager to use power in Runes. I'm of the opinion that little jaunt to the past was a seriously bad idea and will result in even more grief later on when its implications become clearer. Sometimes Linden can't manage to use the wild magic, but it's possible that every single instance of that was due to external circumstances such as the presence of Esmer. She didn't figure out at first that it was Esmer's presence affecting her and so she thought the problem was in her, but as it turned out, it wasn't. Remember this when you think Linden can't handle wild magic.
I think the general tone of Runes is a lot like what LFB would have been if Covenant had left out all that unbelief and rape stuff and instead embraced the hero mode like the readers wished him to, complete with drafting the entire Ramen nation when given the chance. Sure there isn't that much of the TWL-style soul-wrenching horror, but LFB didn't really have that much of that either. I think Runes is needed to set up the Land as something precious again so that we can feel it keenly when the things get to the full apocalypse mode.
I think Runes isn't as good as TWL, but I think it's better than LFB and TOT. Once again, you really need to pay attention to the hints in this books. I maintain that things aren't nearly as rosy to Linden as they might appear on the surface. For example, I'm NOT convinced that the ur-viles have genuinely turned to the side of good, and as for Esmer, I think we have a dangerous villain there, who may even be a sentient* caesure in human form, just like the Mahdoubt...
* I've started to think that all of the caesures are sentient and when Linden destroyed the caesure she had created in order to escape from the past, she killed her own child, which is pretty ironic when you consider that she did the whole thing in order to try to save her adopted child.

www.fantasybedtimehour.com. Thanks for watching. Bye".....at the end of EVERY episode was your invite silly! Jwaneeta contacted us that way. Romeo flew from the east coast.....CHA!
Nerdanel, that's an interesting pov to think that the ceasures are actually sentient. That possibility had not occurred to me.

well...hate to break it to ya but TIW isn't on the agenda...solly. However, you are welcome to come to the finale party in April...

Heh, yeah. The 3000 miles thing and the other-side-of-the-country thing are small setbacks.
Plus, I'd be a crappy "expert" on FBH, heh. As most people here already know, my insight into the Chronicles is pretty much page deep, if even. Faily simplistic. Most things go over my head and just confuse me. And don't even get me started about those damn bargains. Heh.-jay

Too bad!If a second crons series was done,I could be Kasey of The McGuires or some such nonsense.I could stare at people thrue a gold painted pvc coupling and carry a little Cabbage Patch Kid around on my back. Its a pity really......

OH Jay stop already....cha CHA and even so far as CHAHIDELIO....you are so ridiculous. Julie has tried to read LFB, Heatherly is actually reading it as we go. And this is NOT smoke and mirrors for the show....I am the only one who has actually read all of SRD's works. NOT KIDDING...that's what makes for good shows, the NOT knowing....

dlbpharmd wrote:How so?
In the Second Chronicles, Linden was hungry for power deep down inside. She thought the answer was simple: get the power. But she learned, from Covenant's example, and from her experiences with possession, that it's not so simple. She also learned that she was not ready for power, not ready for the cost, the guilt, or the responsibility, until she surpassed the legacy of her parents. She didn't get to the right place inside, with the right answer, until the end of WGW.
Thanks WF. Pretty much what I meant, except better expressed.

Pish and tosh! You'd be an excellent expert. Sometimes the world needs the alternate POV. And you'd be the only expert who says "heh" as part of the explanation. CMJ, go read
Distraction and then tell me if he should be signed up ...

Jay....have we at FBH been channeling you this whole time?.....

So I started rereading Runes last night and made it all the way through the first chapter before I fell asleep. Maybe I'm channeling Jay as well....It better not take me a year to get through this!
Anyway, the first chapter does a decent job of setting up tension and reminding me why I don't like Linden.

Cail, I think I will join you in a re-read. I'll start tonight. I have to warn you though that I read extremely fast.

Suits me. Wanna go a chapter a day?
This would actually be an interesting idea, sort of a "Point/Counterpoint" thing, since we're each approaching the reread with very different ideas.

It would have been AWESOME to have been an expert - but I'm not sure I could have explained lying in bed with 2 hot chicks to my wife.
Nerdanel has TONS of theories that have never occured to anyone.
