This is probably the only cover that sucked me into buying the book:

If the cover art isn't catchy or appealling to me, I might not ever read the book.

I thought I was the only odd-ball that DID judge a book by it's cover!
I 100% agree.
A cover can make all the difference when choosing a book.

I look at the cover. And I read the back. If it says something about "ancient evil returning", I don't buy it. That eliminates about 70% of fantasy novels on the shelves AFAICT.

Every single Covenant book is about "ancient evil returning". Just saying... :P

(The Second Chronicles might be considered to be more about "ancient evil returned" instead if you wish to be particular about tenses, but there are still several examples that justify the use of the continuous present tense.)

That wacky evil. What's the deal with it always returning?-jay

It's afraid of the wrath of the ancient librarian?

I read Amazon reviews and look for patterns. Amazon can be tricky, because some authors elicit people to vote for positive reviews and slam negative reviews.

So I guess it's not tricky. Just look for what rings true. I haven't bought much fantasy lately, because not much of it has interested me.

Lots of good artwork for a Tool album cover there... but for Thomas Covenant books, not so much :(

I think I've fallen in love with some of this guys work (hence me using them for my avatars). I've uploaded four of my favourite paintings of him in the KW Album.

I've been studiously avoiding this forum, but I had to check out this thread after Sea mentioned it elsewhere.

I have to say, I'm very impressed by Mr. Palencar's art. I honestly don't understand the hostile responses I've seen here toward his work. Then again, I've never understood the hostility toward Darrell K. Sweet either. Palencar and Sweet must be like the leper outcasts of the Watch community, heh. That's too bad.

I look forward to the cover for FR. :)

I agree - I liked the Sweet covers (except for The One Tree - never really worked for me). And I'm eager to see what Palencar comes up with. Maybe we'll get a rear-view partial nude of Linden. Woohoo!! I wonder if she's kept her butt firm during the past ten years... :-)

I still wish Putnam stayed with Whelan - he does great work, and having the same artist for all four covers would add a bit of consistency and help pull them all together into a set (even if it is just visually).

My dread is that we'll get a cover which is a woman revealing her butt in some way.

The Sweet covers are what I remember from childhood, so I'll always be partial to them. At least Sweet always got Covenant's hand right, unlike the SOB who did the covers for the Science Fiction Book club omnibus editions. I agree with Romeo about Whelan, the cover for ROTE is gorgeous, and it would have been best if Whelan had did the covers for the entire series. Oh well.

As much as I like Sea's current avatar, I dread to see Palencar's cover for FR.

He's clearly an excellent artist, but I think he seems to be a bit too :hairs: for Covenant.

I never remember having a problem with Sweet. I think his covers for the Covenant books are fine.

But I've looked through a lot of the work of this Palencar guy, and I simply don't like it. It just looks all the same. He seems to have some sort of fetish with nekkid bodies. And that just doesn't seem right for a Covenant book.

Yeah, I'm just not counting on much for this book cover.-jay

Hello. :D

I realize that having different artists for the first two books makes my following estimate very loosy-goosey, but how long before Runes was published did we get our first glimpse of its cover art? This could give us an extremely rough window for when we might see FR's artwork.

As for those who are concerned that the books might not match, there is hope. Runes' cover designer was Meighan Cavanaugh. If her name shows up again with FR, we ought to at least have the same basic layout. I wasn't particularly thrilled with her layout for Runes, but I realize it could have been much worse.

Haha, we're laughing, but I bet anything that the real cover for FR is going to look a lot like that. *Groan*-jay
