TC and Jeremiah are under direct control of Foul.
Isn't that the way Foul works?
Maybe you get that feeling because Donaldson explicitly puts that idea into your head by having Linden worry about the same thing. She thinks, "Foul, what have you done?" Why does she think this? Because Covenant is a bit snippy with her. Forget the fact that Covenant has very good reasons for being snippy. You know, like not wanting to be snuffed out of existence by her blundering up to him, or by her using the Staff. That kind of thing would certainly make me snippy. I rather like not being snuffed out of existence by the clumsy mistakes of others (probably explains a lot of my expletives while driving. :) ) But no one ever accused me of being under the control of Lord Foul just because I curse at people who nearly kill me through their inattention.

If you can't tell, I think either Linden is overreacting, or Donaldson is overwriting.

The Last Chronicles Forum -> Fatal Revenant -> chapter

Post by SleeplessOne »

Interesting chapter in so many ways.

Covenant gets a potty-mouth, yet also doggedly sticks with his tried and true curses ....

Anele can't 'see' either TC or Jeremiah - this reminds me of when Linden couldn't 'see' the Kasreyn when she closed her eyes, due to the effect of the croyel

... But here's what honestly disturbed me the most about the chapter : Covenant smiled at least 6 times !! I doubt he smiled more than 3-4 times during the first two chronicles ... now that just can't be right.

[Mod edit - spoilers unnecessary]

Maybe he's gotten better at venting his emotions by screaming more profanities. ;) Seriously, though, it's not that I particularly mind it, but I don't really understand why SRD decided to harshen the language.
“...The conversations had a nightmare flatness, talking dice spilled in the tube metal chairs, human aggregates disintegrating in cosmic inanity, random events in a dying universe where everything is exactly what it appears to be and no other relation than juxtaposition is possible.”

“There are two kinds of sufferers in this world: those who suffer from a lack of life, and those who suffer from an overabundance.”

You would figure that after 3500 years that TC would learn to smile as being apart of the Arch..
What's this silver looking ring doing on my finger?

I think it's because he can.

I can't remember which of my books it is, I think one in the Ringworld series, or maybe a book written by Heinlein, but it was published in the 70s/80s, and at one point it says, "Soandso said an expletive that your editor will cut."

Implying that whatever swear-word the author wanted to use was either too much for the climate of the day, or that the editor just didn't like it.

I think the reason SRD has upgraded the language is that now he can have TC saying those things. 'Fuck' has been a word for a very, very long time. Just now, recently, is it usable in novels without attracting censorship.

They'll have it on basic cable before you know it. Hell, if you watch Comedy Central at midnight (central time), they don't censor movies or stand up. They call it their "Secret Stash," or something.

After reading the chapter I couldn't help but feel this isn't TC. It just didn't feel right. The character that is suppose to be TC comes off wrong to me. It sure didn't make me feel like the old TC like others here posted. TC also comes off different then the one Linden's has been talking to in ROTE like two different characters. Will have to wait and see.

agreed Earthpower, it's all rather incondign
the all-new Guy Smiley TC is a lil' disconcerting, I strongly suspect something's very much amiss with TC and the Land, I dont think I can put it down to SRD changing his writing style .. but we shall see eh ..
Linden seems to be written very similarly to the 2nd chrons, so I can't put TC's slightly eccentric behaviour down to SRD 'forgetting' how to write his most famous character ..

Of course, this could just be accounted by the fact that, I dunno.

... he's been part of the Arch of Time for several thousand years...

...and maybe being some sort of quasi-immortal, god-like being kinda changes you.

[edit] Also, he's apparently doing some trick where he's in multiple places at once. Perhaps he can only have one aspect of his personality in one place at once?

So, like, tormented/guilt-ridden TC is still up in the Arch lamenting his failings and being depressed, whilst smug jack@ss/I've-got-everything-under-control TC hangs out with Linden and the masters? That'd be excellent -- maybe if he's gotten rid of the poor, masochistic SOB part of himself, he'll have a more entertaining (a.k.a. less blindly positive) attitude toward Linden. ;) And maybe he'll beat the holy hell out of someone without feeling overly guilty about it!

(But in all seriousness, I may be slightly upset -- or at least disconcerted -- if TC has done a complete personality flip...)

Could still be a fake TC.

Yeah, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for "multiple personalities TC."

Where's my 2nd Edition AD&D sourcebook that talks about the 'Shattered God' Hypothesis... I'll dig it up later.
