I quite liked the Dead Pool, but none of the sequels came close to being half the film Dirty Harry was.

I disagree with that, both Sudden Impact, and The Enforcer, were better films, maybe not Magnum Force, but opinions vary.

I'm a big fan of all the films, even The Dead Pool, flawed as it is. The original film is great, but hamstrung by poor acting by the villain. Sudden Impact, even with the gawdawful Sondra Locke, is a fantastic film.

Whoa!! I totally disagree! Scorpio would make my top five list of movie villains. I think he did pathetic, envious sociopath perfectly.

Really? I thought he was way too over-the-top, and his facial expressions took me too far out of the film.

Darn, gonna have to watch it again......

m not sure that this one counts because it is a movie sequel to a television show, and as a film it could stand on its own merit, but Serenity was a great way to cap an under appreciated, and unfinished storyline to the Firefly television series. I saw the film first, and it was good enough to make me go buy the series box set (awesome), since I had never seen the show it was like finding buried treasure, but the film went just a little farther and I think it belongs in this discussion.

I wasn't really surprised with #1 & #2, though I was surprised with which one ended up #1.

I totally disagree with Lethal Weapon 2 being anywhere on this list.

Interesting list, Cail. Here's a couple talking points:

I find it very interesting that this list gave Day of the Dead a higher position(19) than Dawn of the Dead(29). Usually, Dawn gets top billing will Day gets completly dismissed. On this point, I agree with the list, Day is probably my favorite Romero zombie flick.

Now, for a little rant.... Lost World???? Halloween III? How did those get on the list??? Shame on you, list formers!!!

And finally, at the beginning, the state(bold added):
We have disregarded films that are really all of a piece, like Lord of the Rings and Kill Bill, and also series that share elements but restart each time, like Carry On or Three Colours.

Now, I enjoyed the film, thought it was better than the original, but Evil Dead II can hardly be called a sequel. It is a complete reboot of the series... if they wanted a Raimi/ Cambell flick on the list, Army of Darkness would have fit better in their parameters.

I'm actually happy to see Halloween III on the list. It was dumb as all hell, but it really did take it a different direction, and is my favorite of the Halloween movies, but I have never been a fan of the Halloween movies. I prefer my mad slashers in a hockey mask. But Halloween III has a special place in my heart.

As for Lost World - I totally agree. Bad movie. Bad.

And Lethal Weapon II - it was my favorite of the franchise. I never got into part 1. And I have to say Patsy Kensit had something to do with my appreciation of the movie. But after she died in it, it was the first time I noticed that Mel Gibson was actually a pretty good actor. His grief in those scenes following are pretty raw and convincing.

I was shocked that they rated Temple of Doom above Last Crusade. ToD is by far the superior film, but no one seems to recognize that.

Also surprised to not see Exorcist III on there.

I thought #13 was one of the worst sequels ever.

Agreed.

ToD's production quality is superior to LC's, but LC is easily a better film.

My take on the list: I disagree with about half of it and I can't argue with the front six, minus #1 - Aliens? WTF?! A fun, good movie...but better than GodfatherII? or Star Wars 2? Are they out of their f'ing minds? And Batman Returns, other than Pfieffer, was horrible.

Should be higher: Naked Gun 2, Christmas Vacation, Die Hard 3, Spidey2, X2, LC, Jedi, and Desperado. It was nice to see Oz 2, which I really love, get a mention.

What I don't understand is why a lot of people hate Alien 3...heck, I've heard some people say that A:Resurrection was better! WTF?!

Alien 3 I think ties up the series nicely and brings Ripley's story to a satisfying conclusion. It also brought the franchise back to it's scifi-horror origins where it belongs. I'm not downplaying Aliens, it was an excellent film, but as proof that the franchise doesn't belong in a scifi-adventure/action genre, I present Alien vs. Predator.

Having only seen the last third of Alien Resurrection, I wouldn't say it's better than Alien 3, but I don't think it's any worse.

Alien 3 had a lot of visual pizazz (and I usually like that), but the film "alienated" me from the franchise. Maybe I just don't like unrelentingly depressing movies. The original Alien was dark, but it wasn't depressing, and neither was Aliens. I wouldn't call Aliens the greatest sequel I've ever seen, but it's certainly one of the best.

Was Road Warrior even on that list? It was a pretty damn good sequel. Robin and Miriam was cool, too. A Shot In The Dark is one of my favorite sequels....the more I think about it, the more I realize that list sucks!

One good thing about the list is I've never heard of the Oz sequel; I'm going to have to find that one.

Oh yeah, The Road Warrior definitely deserves a spot.
