I think very few things get to me more than these quotes from the Illearth War:
Lord- they- we could not- the Giants-" Suddenly the habitual flatness of Tull's voice was gone. "Lord!"
And the one at the end of the same chapter:
"No." Mhorams reply was abrupt. But it was not abrupt with anger; it was abrupt with the exertion of supressing his sobs."I saw Bloodguard fighting in the service of the Despiser."

SB, those gave me cold chills. There could be a "quotes to chill the heart" thread, and those would be at the top.

From the First Chrons, some of the most poignant parts to me were the intervals at the beginning of TIW and TPTP before TC goes back to the Land. His experiences there are so powerful, emotionally...
All of that, of course, summed up in the revivalist's tent, when he asks "
Help my unbelief!"
On another note, this thread could basically quote all 8 books written so far, and be perfectly valid

"If you resist me one more step I will tear your heart from your pathetic old body and feed it to Herem and Jehannum while you observe them and beg me to let you die."
Maybe one of the best threats of all time.

A "quote to chill the heart" candidate...
In The Grieve, as Kinslaughterer is speaking to his father...
"Why do you not welcome your son"?"

Why didn't I think of that?! That whole chapter was a chapter to chill the heart. Sigh.

Oops I had better not tell jelerak I am a rabid Panthers fan. We weren't very kind to the Saints Sunday. Maybe he won't see my post. (Go Jake!)
Thomas Covenant quotes, huh? I think I have been posting quotes from everyone BUT TC. So here goes, TC only (I don't have the books with me, so forgive misquotes, please):
I'm going to bring this bloody rock down around his ears.
Damn it, Foul, even little children?
There's only one way to hurt a man. Give him back something broken.
Damn it, Linden, don't you know that I love you?
Damn it, Elena, I'm your father! (he likes to say damn it)
(to Bannor, when TC finds out he never sleeps) You're already in hell.

Too true. Both of those were some of my darkest moments when reading the First Chrons. The first time I read the books I wasn't sure that the Land would survive the Illearth War.

My absolute favorite! This more than any other moment (for me) validated TC as the Illender/Earthfirend/Giantfriend/ur-Lord/etc...etc...etc...
You beat me to it, FandF.

A few:
"A sealed door admits no light." -Pitchwife
"Be true. You need not fail." -Ochre-man
Branches spread and tree trunks grow,
through rain and heat and snow and cold,
and earthquakes rock and cliff unseal;
My leaves grow green and seedlings bloom
since days before the earth was old,
I inhale all expiring breath,
and breathe out life to bind and heal.
But axe and fire leave me dead.
I know the hate of hands grown bold.
Depart to save your heart-sap's red:
my hate knows neither rest nor weal.
-Song of the Forestal
(forgive me if it's slightly off; I'm going from memory as I don't have the books in front of me)
"She was--flawed from birth." -Triock (that whole scene, really)
Thomas Covenant: Go to hell! Don't you ever sleep?
Bannor: The Bloodguard do not sleep.
TC: You're already in Hell.
"Do not make a mockery of me in the eyes of my entire life." (I forget who said this one, but it's always haunted me)
"Heal yourselves!" -TC (end of PTP)
First Mark (dying): True?
Thomas Covenant: Yes.
(I'm not sure why I love this so; whenever I read it it makes me cry)
There're more, but those are all I can come up with at the moment. . .

Impressive.
Branches spread and tree trunks grow
Through rain and heat and snow and cold:
Though wide world's winds untimely blow,
And earthquakes rock and cliff unseal,
My leaves grow green and seedlings bloom.
Since days before the Earth was old
And Time began its walk to doom,
The Forests world's bare rock anneal,
Forbidding dusty waste and death.
I am the Land's Creator's hold:
I inhale all expiring breath,
And breathe out life to bind and heal.
But ax and fire leave me dead.
I know the hate of hands grown bold.
Depart to save your heart-sap's red:
My hate knows neither rest nor weal.

I always liked the song that Lena sings at the beginning of LFB:
Something there is in beauty
which grows in the soul of the beholder
like a flower--
fragile--
for many are the blights
which may waste
the beauty
or the beholder--
and imperishable--
for the beauty may die
or the beholder may die
or the world may die
but the soul in which the flower grows
survives.
To me it always captured the beauty and the sadness that are the Land. And there is Hope.

Thanks

I always loved that song. It sticks with me, for some reason.
