But seriously folks...
The psychological makeup of the Haruchai is very obviously not the same as that of other races. It is not in them to do as you are suggesting. Knowledge, power, weapons are not in their psyche. Since they swore a Vow to a man of such incredible power means that they can respect people even if they do use these things. But that's not the same as using it themselves, or helping the Lords gain more. It is not within them to give such assistance.

But they did, finally, manage to come to the decision to help that one time. And they, no doubt, regret that decision to this day. Their inexperience with such things meant that they didn't know that this was not the time to reveal their knowledge!

I seriously doubt "Minas" and "Binas" are different words, since it has been said that the lords pronounce the Words of Power very badly. It seems far more likely that the Unfettered is using a different (and possibly more accurate) pronunciation of the Word than that there are two different Words of Power that are so similar.

Well, while that's conceivable, it's also conceivable that there are, indeed, two Words of Power that are very similar.

Fist and Faith wrote:OK, maybe, maybe not. :) But here's my theory.

(Please don't kill me for starting yet another thread for the Seven Words. There's just too many pages in the others to keep track. Everybody start a thread with your favorite theory, and we'll try to stay on track. 'k? :) )

Anyway, Lord Callindrill's post was a revelation to me!!! I completely forgot about this!!!!!!!!!
“This is Banas Nimoram, the dark of the moon on the middle night of spring. Not in my generation has there been such a night, such a time of rareness and beauty. Do not measure the Land by the standard of yourself. Wait. This is Banas Nimoram, the Celebration of Spring – finest rite of all the treasures of the Earth.”
And the glossary says, simply,
Banas Nimoram: the Celebration of Spring
Holy cow, that’s amazing!!!!!

OK, the Seven Words are not seven words. Just counting the ones we know rules that out.

Here’s a possibility...
One of the “Seven Words” is Banas Nimoram - the Celebration of Spring.

Another Word is Melenkurion abatha - Melenkurion EarthBlood.

A third Word is Duroc minas mill khabaal, and I won't even speculate on what it means.

Let me explain. We know that one phrase translates to a natural rite. Part of another oft-used two-word phrase, Melenkurion abatha, is another natural thing - the largest mountain. The fact that the EarthBlood is under that mountain certainly makes the mountain special beyond its size, and could be the meaning of abatha.

And that’s my theory - that the Words are natural Powers/phenomenon/rites.

Further, I’m guessing that the Words are in the very language that the Earthpower taught Berek; the Earthpower’s “native tongue”! I’ll bet that this is the language that a conversation between a Forestal and an Elohim would be in. Certainly, it’s not a human-created language. Why would a Raver flinch at hearing something spoken in a language created by puny humans? And they wouldn’t flinch if you yelled Celebration of Spring, so it’s not merely mentioning the rite that hurts them, but mentioning the rite in its native tongue.

And if it’s such strong stuff that the Ravers flinch when it’s pronounced badly, I wonder what happens when it’s pronounced correctly!! :)
very interesting .. and i think you're on to something here .. but i must just point out that Melenkurion abatha is not the largest mountain .. Melenkurion Skyweir is the name of the largest mountain peak in the Land ;) now whether abatha actually means earth blood or not is difficult to know but sounds particularly plausible .. not a bad theory all in all ;)

kudos!

Thanks for the kudos. :) And sorry for the less-than-ideal wording. I wasn't saying that Melenkurion abatha was the name of the largest mountain, just that part of that phrase, meaning the Melenkurion part, was the name of the largest mountain. Not the full name, but the name.

But since you made me think about that part again, I wonder if Skyweir means mountain, and Melenkurion means largest or highest. In which case abatha might mean something else entirely, but having Melenkurion in front of it means it is the largest of whatever it is.

cool .. the largest of most powerful .. or magnaminious whatever it is referring to ;)

if abatha is earthblood .. then maybe it is refering to its source .. the largest source, most powerful source .. or what have you ;)

This is cool, because these suggestions are ways of letting the Words be Powers/rites/phenomenon, as I originally posted, but getting into great detail of the meanings of the individual words! I'm loving this! :D

And so far, I still like that abatha means Earthpower in the language of the Earthpower. Or, basically, myself. :)

i think its strange that the old lords never made a dictionary...

but then i suppose that it wouldn't help much...

like buying a slovacian dictionary with no english translation...

i also like fist's idea, and i like those original translations, esp sinse as i posted, the unfettered's quote works very well as an invokation of power... which is what the 7 words were.

On the subject of Binas/Minas, has anyone thought of the possibility of conventions in the entire lanuage of the Old Lords not just the phrases? What im saying is look at french (for those who dont know french just follow along) in french the word for 'the' like: 'the pencil' can be Les or if followed by a vowel L' The same goes for Des, ie) D'. So could the REAL word be Inas, with B'inas and M'inas? Only over the course of time the apostrophy just got left out, to leave Binas and Minas? Two ways of describing something?

Hmmm.... I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of the Words being powers, etc.

But, I thought the seven words were:

1. Melenkurion
2. Abatha
3. Duroc
4. Minas
5. Mill
6.
Spoiler
Harad
7. Khabaal

I could be wrong.... :?
