Said "Advice Forum" would, of course, have this thread Sticky'd right at the top as an example of how advice should be given.

It's already getting pretty sticky in places...

I think it's already degenerating faster than the usual intarwebs thread. What's the average 'til an off-topic post -- five pages? six?

If I was Cov Jr, I'd split this thread from the point my first post began, thus preserving the original integrity. We could then have an evil twin of the advice thread, see? I always thought "How Do You Feel Today" was kinda advice-laden, but this thread can be the extra-caffeinated version (the caffeine being advice...a double shot...of advice...ah, I'm great).

In terms of buying a used car, what brand does everyone swear by? I'm looking at Saturn for reliability....anyone have other preferences?

Saturns are very good cars. My only hesitation is that the General Motors restructuring eliminated Saturn as a brand going forward.

If you are not planning on keeping the used car for more than five years or so, absolutely go ahead; otherwise be prepared for the possibility of having no replacement parts (or only those from wrecking yards) available.

(I am very fond of my Pontiac Vibe AWD, which I bought new in 2004 and now is in the same situation. If your horizon is five years or under and you can get a favorable deal on a Vibe, take it!)

Nissan is very reliable...and good service prices. Volkswagen too, if one is near your town.

We owned two Saturns, bought them brand new. They began falling apart right at warranty time. We didn't buy any others after that.

Both are definitely available in your area, Kaydene. I know Red Bluff better (though I'm in the Seattle area now), but you're not far away and your community is a bit larger.

What year, Rob? My recommendation was based on the experience of people who bought early Saturns, but maybe the quality slipped as time went by...

Podcast sounds like a no-brainer for somebody with a radio background, doesn't it? You're right, I've just gotta find the right thing. I keep thinking it will just, y'know, come to me. Like the swine flu or something. But hopefully more pleasant than that.

i have been looking at blogging myself. seems to me the important thing is to find the right blogging forum that focuses on your interests and attracts people of similar interests.

This is the one I think I am going to begin journaling in. Perhaps I can get a better audience for my writing there. Love to know what you think of the site.

I'll second LF's Nissan recommendation. They seem to go forever without falling apart.

I've had a 2002 Saturn. Got it used a couple years ago. I haven't had any particular trouble with it.

Christy has a 2000 VW Beetle. The biggest problem is the freakin' windows! They're electric, and they've just stop working a couple times. Takes a hunk of change to get them fixed, too!


Best car I ever had was a Chevette. 20ish years ago. No fuel injection, but it started in winter every time with barely any need to hit the gas. And you know those signs that say bridge freezes before road? Well they do. As I gradually slid sideways toward the guardrail, I thought of how it might be neat to put heating systems under them. When I hit the guardrail, it took off the headlight, part of the battery, and banged up the radiator real good. So I started it back up, and drove 20 miles to the next exit. Great car!

I've never had a reliable car, so I can't help there. Cameraman Jenn might be the one to speak to though, being an auto mechanic by trade.
