Plus, in Boston itself there probably isn't much of an "off season". As well as a tourist city it's a commercial city, with lots of business travelers expensing their stay. Off the top of my head, I think I paid $65 a night in Albuquerque. In Boston, I think we'd be lucky to find rooms at $165; and if not I'd wonder about the neighborhood.

No kidding. I'd suggest that we check into my firm's corporate apartments, but there are lots of problems with that scenario -- the major one being that they could kick us out if somebody else in the firm needs to stay there on business.

October would seriously be the off-season for the beach, tho, so motel rooms might be had for a song -- maybe?

Agreed.

I completely understand Jenn's desire to lock down arrangements so we can get the best possible rates, her personal desire to return to an area she knows well, and her sense of reciprocity in getting a degree of say-so in exchange for her central role in planning both this year's Elohimfest and the upcoming Nor'Easter fest...but I am sure the Giants have an apothegm about haste.

We could probably get a much better hotel rate in the Boston beltway area than in Boston or near boston. The tradeoff is that we'd have to drive into town and park for those times we wanted to go urban. Then again, by situating NW of beantown we'd be closer to any places in NH we were going. And S we'd be closer to Plymouth and The Cape.

(I don't remember much of the New England trip we took when I was a kid, but I do remember Plymouth Rock. Even then, they had a platform above it with a porthole through which you could see the famous rock, but not touch it. Prior to building the viewing platform, too many people were taking chips home as souvenirs...)

(At some point I got to put together a list of things we could do.)

I only know a handful of things about Boston or the surrounding area. There are a few museums and the aquarium. What about the Freedom Trail? Maybe the Cape, if people want a beach day? What does everyone want to do anyways?

BTW, Columbus Day weekend 2011 was in the 80s. Everyone complained it was too hot. The weekend after was damp and cool, high 50s. Peak folliage hasn't quite arrived yet (Oct 17) but it seems to be late this year. They blame the heavy rain of late. (They blame the lack of rain in other years for the same thing.) [story]

Anyone wanting to see Plymouth Rock better be prepared to be disappointed. Unless of course you realize it's just a rock. I'm there all the time because I only live a few miles away and it's a great place to stroll around so I hear all the comments.
The funniest one is "that's it?" in a disappointed tone.
Am I'm thinking....."it's a freaking rock, what do you expect, it to jump up and dance?"
It's cute though and if you take the tour and hear the history of the area it's interesting.

Wait....there's actually foliage in Mass?! I thought it was only here in NH.

Here it is the 17th and the leaves are starting to fall pretty hardcore here in NH. One can never predict New England weather!

Yeah, Plymouth Rock is pretty much nothing. I wouldn't mind going to the Boston Aquarium while there. I love that place. Anyway, getting back to figuring up some dates might not be a bad idea.

Just to let you all know ... it snowed last night here in the Boston area. Not just a few flakes which you then can claim as snow on a technical basis. We're talking white lawns, slippery roads, white-out condition snow. And more snow is coming tomorrow night. They are predicting in inches.

It's really early for snow. But this stuff happens in New England.

Just something to think about when planning what part of October is the best choice: snow!
