When I worked for the college. I was mainly in Engineering computer support.
(I was IT before IT was though of. Only Engineering area)
We had an early version of 3D Studio and I learn how to use it.
Not as good as the pros but I created photorealistic renderings that convince me
that pictures and film could be created or manipulated to show people
who looked like they committed a crime. That was back in the early 1990's.
Not surprised that something like this has caught on.
And it's only going to get worse.

No one is ready for deepfakes. The only way to avoid them is simple: don't believe anything you read or see on the Internet. What a shame--the technology is only barely 25 and it has already been ruined completely.

I prefer to think of it in terms of HTML versions rather than years. Which makes the internet only 5. Just a baby really.

No one has ever been ready for deepfakes. Look at what the various "holy" books have done.

And most fakes, no matter HOW accomplished, are checkable, people are just too damn lazy or too damn tribe/identity immersed to bother. Like all the memes and russia-trolling and Trump tweets. It takes about 30 seconds to find out they're bullshit. People just won't/don't.

LOL .. that was an interesting read Wayfriend.

AND that rings a bell .. with the doco I watched recently about the alt right and their troll army .. whos job it is to make up shit and disseminate it via memes .. on social media .

Its insidious and far reaching and I honestly dont know how Zuckerberg or anyone else can combat that kind of shit. Cos its shit .. pure and simple shit. They are disseminating misinformation and making it more than palatable and believable .. and V is dead right .. no one does their due dilligence .. let along fact checks before jumping on the bandwagon.

Its a worry .. and their answer? Get the left onboard .. and fighting lies with lies ..

And dont please anyone start a fight fire with fire argument 🙏

As significant at least as the use of deepfake tech itself to cook up incriminating stuff is what politician etc will be able to claim they didn't do when confronted with evidence that they did, simply by claiming the evidence was deepfaked!

[Sorry if the article mentioned this; I haven't had time to read it yet. This was something I picked up on in another place.]

That damage will last until everyone stops believing all video clips they see on the Internet, even the true ones.

Many of us are already highly sceptical of any news that comes even though the apparently most reliable sources. A case in point; the BBC ran a story in its main bulletin about opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn having attended a wreath laying for one of the Munich bombers before becoming Labour leader. It later transpired that the ceremony had been attended by numbers of politicians attempting to establish dialogue with the Palestinian leadership and the ceremony had been a remembrance event marking the deaths of all Palestinians in the ongoing hostilities with Israel. This kind of news skewing from our major (and highly trusted) news source) in attempting to influence public opinion (in this case against the establishment hated Corbyn who they are terrified might pull off a Donald Trump) is rife - almost ubiquitous - in every news source we have. So we finish questioning everything.

Well, we should question everything. Problem is that just because we question it, doesn't mean it's not true. :D

We live in the Age of Lies. Donald Trump, it was estimated by The Washington Post told around 2,500 direct lies or misdirections that boarderd on lies in his first year of office. The entire Brexit campaign was based around either overt lies (the 350 million pounds per week for the NHS) or misrepresentations of the facts (that it would not damage our economy). This is the populist world we have created and we get the politicians we deserve.

I find it odd that this issue isn't part of the discussion of this thread:

Google's Search Engine Could Steal the Election

Google's Search-Ranking Manipulation Is Affecting Elections

Google's New Fact-Check Feature Almost Exclusively Targets Conservative Sites

96 Percent of Google Search Results for 'Trump' News Are from Liberal Media Outlets

Is this not worth discussing? I personally do not get alarmed about such things. But these articles have data and stuff!

I will have to come back and read each of your linked articles Z but .. from just looking at one of them
Google's New Fact-Check Feature Almost Exclusively Targets Conservative Sites
This sounds a subjective review with a clear agenda.

I use fact checkers a lot .. probably not as much as I should though ;) but .. yeah .. and I have never found that to be even remotely true. But as I said when I have a bit more time, tonight maybe .. Ill give the links the due diligence they deserve .. in the interests of facilitating an informed discussion.

That's not quite how it works. I'm no fan of Google (at least, I'm a fan of the search engine (I've been using it for 20 years) but I'm not a fan of the corporation itself) but nobody is sitting out there deliberately choosing to display certain types of information.

Google will give you what you're looking for, and it will take everything it knows about you into account when it does so. (There's no such thing as "the first page of Google" any more. Search personalisation means everybody gets a different first page.)

This is close on the order of how it works. Relatively anyway: Trump Says Google Is Rigged, Despite Its Denials. What Do We Know About How It Works?
