I like a lot, but only LOTR and some of the Pern stuff stand out in my memory.

What do u like, ASOIAF? And do u have a strange selective memory!

ASOIAF? What does that mean? I have to admit my sci-fi collection is much more vast that my fantasy collection. I have read several fantasy books, but not many of them came off as being as good as Covenant or LOTR. I do like Robert E. Howard's Conan, tho.

Couldn't agree more. In fact, I have
a Gene Wolfe board, if you care to stop by.

hmm...good question. I haven't read anything in so long

so my list is sure to be outdated, though I will give it a go...
*Jordan's Wheel of Time series
*Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (only read the first two--don't know how many are out now)
*Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton (though they are probably considered more horror than fantasy/sci-fi)
*Rhapsody series by Elizabeth Haydon
*of course, LOTR
I'd have to take a look at my bookshelves to figure out more

but those are the fav's that come to mind.

NON- SRD? O...K...
I've mentioned her in other threads, and I have every intention of starting a thread dedicated to her. The great, the awesome...
MELANIE RAWN!!!
As for favorites:
Dragon Prince Trilogy
Dragon Star Trilogy (sequels)
The Golden Key (co-written by MR, Kate Elliot, and Jennifer Roberson)
She also has another trilogy, Exiles, but the third book won't be out for two to five more years, no matter what DAW says.
Check em out!

This is a good thread.
My top 5:
5: Clive Barker's Weaveworld.
4: C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy.
3: Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber.
2: Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
1: Stephen R. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series of course.
LoTR would fall about 6th for me.
Take care,
Matthew

My top five, excluding Covenant:
Dark Tower - Stephen King
Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin
Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
Lions of Al-Rassan - Guy Gavriel Kay
Monarchies of God - Paul Kearney
Not necessarily in that order, it depends on how well the first two are resolved when finished.

Well, Donaldson is my favorite Author, Though I've only read the Chronicles and the Gap cycle.
After Donaldson,
1. The Wheel of Time
2. A Son of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)
3. Suncross (by Barbara Hambly)
4. The Coldfire Trilogy
5. The Chronicles of Amber (only the Corwin books)
Honorable mentions are Terry Pratchett's Discworld and The first two Recluse books by Modesitt.

Many, many great books mentioned here already. Here are a few of my favourites, in no particular order or ranking:
The Riddle-Master Trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip.
Dragon's Blood and Heart's Blood by Jane Yolen.
Delusion's Master by Tanith Lee. (Also, Death's Master and Night's Master. Not sure if they were ever referred to as a trilogy.)

Yeah...Malazan, Dark Tower, Feist, (especially the Empire trilogy), Gemmel, Jordan (I know I know), Le Guinn, Weiss & Hickman, (I know ok?!), Melanie Rawn. Oh...and after today, I have to add Bakker.
