I'm sorry I brought about this whole thing, Foul, but please, try to lighten up a little. We're just having some fun here. At least I was just trying to have some fun. Yes...I know it's a little off topic, and I applogize. Maybe I should just close this and we should start an official "Lord of the Rings Sucks" topic elsewhere? But there's no reason why you need to take any of this personally... I mean, if me and Loremaster and some other people want to talk about how much we don't like Lord of the Rings, what harm is in that? And why should you care what anyone says about it? It's not like you wrote it. I can call it childish and stupid as much as I feel like. That's no reason to get worked up. It's not like I'm hurting anyone. I'm just trying to have some fun by poking fun at LotR.
Now, I understand that since this is a Covenant Forum, I agree this doesn't belong here. So for that reason I greatly appologize. Perhaps it belongs in the General forum or the (dare I say) Tolkien Forum. You're right, I agree with you that this is off topic and people shouldn't have to read it in this particular forum. But let's tone down the critizism of each other, everyone, because it doesn't belong anywhere here on the Watch. There's no reason to be rude to each other here.-jay

No, but those books do have some personal significance/influence on me as a writer--more so than any other book. I can take some LOTR jabbing, yeah, but it went on too much for me, personally, which was why I reacted the way I did. I have not read LOTR, but I hope to sometime next year (long after I've devoured Runes, that is). I immensely enjoyed Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring movie -- in fact, it was one of the greatest moviegoing experiences I ever had. Now that all 3 LOTR films have passed into celluloid legend and the hype has died down, I feel like I may be ready at last to tackle the books. I want to get myself in the right frame of mind for this. It would be a disservice to Tolkien to read his stories with a negative mindset.

I had as much fun reading this book as I had watching the movies! All that's missing for me now are the actual novels, to "complete" the experience. It wasn't that hard for me to become engrossed by Tolkien's world. It is simply a very different experience than Donaldson's world. Both stand together, stand apart, and stand unique.

Oh Neo!! You are in for a wonderful experience. But don't just read LOTR, there is The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Book of Lost Tales I and II, and The Unfinished Tales. Tolkien was a genius and the world he created was mythical, magical and glorious! From the time of the Valor, Beren and Luthien, the great days of the Elves, the rise and fall of Morgoth, the coming of Gandalf and Saruman, the making of the Rings of Power and the betrayal of Sauron all leading up to not one war of the Ring but two...it's all wonderful. Tolkien's world is rich in history and language, he wrote it all out, the languages, the timelines...everything. He is the Master, in my humble little opinion. He opened so many doors for other writers.

Personally, I just think that Tolkien gets so much praise from the world, that he stands to deserve a little harsh criticism every once in a while. It's just a book, afterall. Nothing's perfect.
Anyway, since this topic is just crazy now, in everyone's best interests, I'll think I'll just move it to...er...where? I should put it in the Tolkien Forum, but I'm afraid to completely piss off the Tolkien fans...heh. I'm tempted to just close it all together. Oh well, I'll just put it there. Awwww, I'm not worked up Jay. I guess with all the stuff that is out now it's hard to get into Tolkien and his writing style. But, personally, Tolkien was my doorway into fantasy. It opened up a world both fantastic and heartbreaking. (Gollum broke, and still does break, my heart to this day). And then I thought of one man creating all this. Not just the story, but the HISTORY, the LANGUAGES, the WORLDS. It was all so overwhelming to me. And then there is the music, and the magic, and the honest to truth battle of good and evil. The battle to survive an impossibly powerful foe. And the idea that one small hobbit could actually be the key to defeat such a being.
I hold Tolkien in such high regard, because Jay, he literally deserves it. He was a genius. And yes, maybe his writing style now is archaic and linear, but he is the Master. In every sense of the word. Without Tolkien, I would not have read Donaldson, Peake, Moorcock, Lewis, Rowling, Le Guin, Eddings, Wolf, Gemmell,...etc.
