I second: the Pseudo Echo version of "Funkytown". I used to drive around the Washington Beltway (when the traffic was moving, which in those days it often was.) grooving to it. I categorized it as great driving music.
Also IMO Van Halen did great covers. Not only will I second "You Really Got Me", but (don't shoot me!) I'll also vote for their versions of "Dancin' In The Streets" and "Pretty Woman" from Diver Down.
Another great coverer, IMO: Stevie Ray Vaughan.
He did two IMO great covers of two Hendrix classics: "Voodoo Child" (one of my fave Hendrix #'s) and, yes, a delicate virtuoso instrumental version of "Little Wing".
I rather liked Prince's version of "Raspberry Beret" (Hendrix). Prince gave it an appropriate lightheartedness Hendrix couldn't.
Speaking of the Beatles covers from the Sgt. Pepper's movie:
Yes, IMO Aerosmith made "Come Together" its own! It sounds to me like an Aerosmith song anyway.
I thought "Strawberry Fields Forever" was improved greatly for being sung by a female voice.
And the production of "I Want You" (? Frampton singing lead?) was better.

Oops. I looked it up, like I should have long ago.sgtnull wrote:Prince wrote Raspberry Beret.
This comes from several yrs ago, when I could've SWORN I heard a Hendrix version of "Raspberry Beret" on the radio. The vocalist sounded like Hendrix.
OK. My bad.
While looking into this, I noticed that a cover of "Raspberry Beret" was done some years ago by something called "Hindu Love Gods" which consisted of Warren Zevon and REM sans Michael Stipe. I never thought Zevon could sound much like Hendrix, but I suppose that might be what I heard. If that's the case, all I can say is we could've done without it; it doesn't even have the excuse of being Hendrix.
While I'm here, here are some other recent covers I rather enjoyed:
"Cruisin Together" (Smokey Robinson) by Gwynneth Paltrow & Huey Lewis (never guessed she had such a voice!)
"Give A Little Bit" (Supertramp) by the Goo Goo Dolls
"Don't Dream It's Over" (Crowded House) Sixpence None the Richer (another number that IMO is improved by a female lead vocalist, Leigh Nash)

i'd like to hear the Sixpence version.
great covers...
Bob Mould's version of Shoot Out the Lights (Richard Thompson)
Natalie Merchant: Sympathy For the Devil (Stones)
10,000 Maniacs: Everyday Is Like Sunday (Smiths)
Peace Train (Cat Stevens)
Sugar: Where Diamonds Are Like Halos, Anyone.
maybe a cheat since Dave Barbe is in both bands. but Bob Mould brought out the beast in Dave and these two songs slay. they need to work together more often. both are better for it.

A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Saved Me (originally by Failure)
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Awesome God : DC Talk doing a Rich Mullins song. when we saw them live they did this song acoustic. at a point they stopped playing and we all in the audience continued to sing the chorus. this was at Cynthia Woods which has half the audience on a grassy hill. and at night this was very moving.

The Grateful Dead played a rather good adaptation of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away. But my favorite has to be a song that most people do not even realize is a cover-Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love-It is a rip off of Muddy Water's You Need Love-almost word for word.Although I like the song, Zeppelin did Muddy dirty by not crediting him on the album-McKinley Morganfield a.k.a Muddy Waters should have gotten enough royalties off that song to live the good life.
Recently came across a cover of Genesis' - Land of Confusion by DIsturbed.
More for the surprise value of hearing it on a much heavier scale
