It is a lively thread!
If you can call making the Staff of Law and putting all things back in their order (and wasn't that under a Fertile Sun?).
Covenant showed Linden how to love, actually. Pitchwife did indeed like her. All of them liked her. Vain liked her, hahah.
I like her very much.

1) she healed the Land
She half-assed heal the Land.
If you call non-Sunbane afflicted soil "healing the Land".
2) Showed covenant how to love again
Where does TC ever say he *didn't* know how to love?
And who else was Covenant going to hook up with?
She was the only non-giant chick on the Dromond.
He would have been all over Lady Alif too if it wasn't for the Elohim.
3) Pitchwife liked her
He felt sorry for her.
Big big difference!
4) and in Runes she mfph mfph mfph oops near spoiler there..
You might not want to go there.
She might be the cause of everyone's problems.
God-damn-it, I might just have convinced myself back.....

You know what occurs to me about the Last Chronicles? Something that bugs me about the books and reinforces my membership in THOOLAH is that Linden's prominence in the narrative has so vastly diminished Covenant's role in the story to the degree that he seems like the Fox Mulder character in the last season of the X-Files. The difference is that Covenant isn't being played by David Duchovny who is tired of the show and just wants to move on to other projects so he begrudgingly appears in only a handful of episodes. No Covenant is being relegated to second fiddle because the author wants him there.
Would it have been so bad to have created a spin off series featuring Linden Avery instead?
Would it have sold less books?
Would it have served SRD's purposes any less to have removed the "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" header from the title and completely embraced LA from the git go?
If "The Continuing Story of the Land featuring Linden Avery" was the header on the Last Chronicles I would have happily shunned the book as the spinoff I never asked for but didn't have to read.
This way I wasn't given a choice. If I want more Covenant I have to take a ton more Linden Avery.
Its not really fair...to me at least.

Yes, but... how do you know that changing which characters he focuses on will make you like Donaldson's newer work any better? Seems to me people are just latching onto Linden as an excuse for why they no longer like Donaldson as much. People change, authors change. It's been 35 years. This is what Donaldson writes now, this is the story he's telling. You like it or you don't.

Well the odds are certainly in favor of my liking his newer work more if I didn't get a massive, fatal dose of Linden Avery.Murrin wrote:Yes, but... how do you know that changing which characters he focuses on will make you like Donaldson's newer work any better?
At the end of the day LA just isn't a very interesting character to me.
All kidding aside she doesn't resonate with me as much as TC does and it is in truth, being completely honest, only somewhat irritating to me.
I am an SRD fan. I like his writing style. I like what he does with characterizations. I like his method of description and general storytelling regardless of the phase or era his work comes to me.
And by and large I am quite happy to have been given this great gift of the Last Chronicles, in whatever form it takes.
In my mind the THOOLAH vs LA battle is all in good fun.
Would I prefer things to go differently in the Last Chrons story?
Well sure. I also wish George Lucas had found some other director for his prequel films. Does that mean I completely hate them? Nah. I'll sit through all the wooden acting and painful dialog because in general I'm a fan. Same goes for SRD and the Chronicles of Thomas Duchovny.

*shrug* If we're going to be technical, the past twenty or so posts should probably be spoilered.
So try to be careful about it, guys.
