Hey....! I went to the one in Dallas with a friend. :D Making my....somethingteenth time to see Serenity on the big screen. And still not bored. The Browncoats were just as friendly and exuberant as ever, and our theatre (which ended up expanding ithe event to include a second screen, to meet demand) raised something in the range of $4000 for equality now. I'm still wearing my Serenity Now Equality Now armband. It was a good feeling.

Btw......has anybody else seen Joss's speech, when he was recognized at an event called On the Road to Equality: Honoring Men on the Front Lines? Check it out, it's another reason why I love this guy so much. He's introduced by Meryl Streep. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYaczoJMRhs

This speech was played before the movie at the screening..... :D

Bird you're back

Post by taraswizard »

Bird,
Where you been? Dudette, you're back! The Serenity/Equality Now screenings were awesome. Fans who all love these texts created by Joss Whedon and uniting to support a greater cause. IIRC, the Chicago event raised approximately $3,000.00 for Equality Now. Activities like this are ways of living up to the quote from AtS in you're signature block
If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'Cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today....Because if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness - is the greatest thing in the world."
-Angel
, and the promise at the conclusion of Not Fade Away that you keep on fighting.

Regarding the Joss comments at the banquet where he was presented the award, the one's I heard were his responses to journalists about why he continues to write strong women characters? One of his responses were "Why aren't you asking those other 100 or so writers why they're not?" Or "Because you're still asking me that question". And using an intonation and a a voice some what similar to when Homer says "Dooonuts", Joss's answer was "Cause they're hot". Those are a few of examples. See the man is the greatest.

Taras! |G

I'm back as much as I can be. Even though we've lived here for nearly a year, I'm still always busy with something that needs to be done. We're painting one room at a time....this place really had dirty walls when we moved in. We're also breaking our backs right now burying boards at an angle all along the fence, trying to keep the dogs from digging out. They keep escaping.... :(

But I'm here when I can be. You people are never going to be rid of me. ;)
And I'm going to get my Buffy dissection up sometime, I swear. :D

Ah. . I adore Firefly. I've watched it several times through on DVD already. I liked Serenity okay. . . but most of you will understand when I say that I find watching it to be emotionally draining. :( I remember sitting in the theatre watching Serenity for the first time, and after a certain event happened, my best friend and I turned to each other and simulataneously said, "They can't do that!" Anywho. . .

One of the things I love best about Firefly is the dialogue. It never fails to make me laugh. :)

Does anyone watch Angel, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I imagine that you know already, but Joss wrote those shows too. The dialogue in Buffy is hysterical at times, and the story is okay. In Angel, the story is better, but it is more serious, and the lines aren't as great. Just throwing that out there.

Lyr,
Welcome to the Joss love sector of the Watch, it's not particularly large but it's strong and fervent. There's a thread here about BtVS and please feel free to comment at your leisure. There's no particular topic restriction, and I sure me or Birdandbear or Zahir or someone (fistandfaith is strong with the Buffster love, too) will engage in dialogue if you want.

I have to say that Firefly is my favorite Joss show. I think it has a greater depth than either of the other shows, even in the midst of the comedy. The casting is perfect, the dialogue beyond compare, the actors top-notch, and the writing is incomparable. Why, then, is it not on the air now? [rhetorical question] Stupid ratings system. . .

I like Serenity more than Firefly, which I like a little better than Serenity.

I loved Firefly. Serenity was...good, but I was actually dissapointed. I felt like the deaths were sorta forced, for one thing. Maybe it was just that I didn't want to see the end, though. But Firefly is the winner for me.

All death is forced, Holsety; nobody dies willingly.

Spoiler
It's more just that Book's death seemed kinda brushed off, and didn't have much to do with the rest of the movie. Walsh's was kinda sad and annoying at the same time, but at least we see Zoe responding to it with well depicted emotion and stuff.

Yup. Like Holsety said, they kinda just brushed it off. It was on that planet where Mal and Co visit for a short time... there's a small child... uh... that's all I remember.

Spoiler
I have to agree with the comments about Book. It was too rushed, and seemed written in more because they probably couldn't get the actor to play the priest for longer.

Spoiler
Was his presumed connections with the Alliance ever explained? I just rewatched the episode "Safe" where he's shot and a team of doctors aboard an Alliance ship save his life after he's identified by the Alliance Captain. Mal wonders at the end of the episode how it was that a shepherd would have that kind of power with the Alliance.
